Maye came into the season with high expectations and played well for the Tar Heels. He is now in the 20234 NFL Draft.
As a five-star prospect Maye had his choice of colleges, but chose to go to North Carolina and follow in his family’s footsteps. He redshirted behind Sam Howell in his first year on campus. In 2022, Maye took over the starting job, passing for 4,321 yards, 38 touchdowns and seven interceptions on 66.2 percent completion. He helped the Tar Heels win nine games in his first year as a starter. For the 2023 season, he passed for 3,608 yards, 24 touchdowns and nine interceptions on 64.9 percent completion. His play aided the Tar Heels in winning eight games.
Following his second season as a starter, Maye declared for the 2024 NFL Draft. He is a projected first round pick.
Drake Maye Strengths
Maye has good size for the quarterback position at 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds. This is prototypical for an NFL quarterback and allows him to see clearly over the line of scrimmage. With his size comes good arm strength, as he is able to get some speed on his throws to fit into tight windows. He can also push the ball downfield with relative ease.
He has accuracy to all areas of the field. On short throws, he has good ball placement to allow receivers to run after the catch. He can fit the ball into tight windows in the middle of the field. On deep throws, he has made several good throws in his career. An added point for his accuracy is that he is able to throw receivers open in the short and intermediate areas of the field.
His ability to read the field is very impressive. Maye can make multiple reads, going through his progressions at a decent pace. There are some one-read plays, but when aske to Maye showed good field vision. To go with his progressions, he is able to pick apart zone defense, fining receivers who have found the soft spot in the zone.
Drake Maye Weakness
Maye can work on his footwork to improve. There are times when he can abandon his footwork and then his accuracy dips as a result. When he drops back cleanly in the pocket and maintains proper footwork, he is very accurate.
While he does stand in against pressure well and that leads to some good throws, there are times where he doesn’t feel pressure coming and takes additional sacks. He could escape the pocket and re-set to make plays downfield, as he does sometimes with his solid athletic ability.
He can sometimes have too much faith in his receivers. Maye throws too many 50/50 balls and some of those end up getting intercepted. He didn’t have the most talented receivers, especially at the start of 2024 and needs to know who to trust when putting the ball in potentially harmful situations.
