The Spurs lost to the Detroit Pistons on Friday 79-73. This ended their hopes of a 2023 Summer League championship.
The shorthanded Spurs were without Victor Wembanyama, Malaki Branham and Julian Champagnie in this one. They fought throughout the first half with the Pistons and they ended the first half on an 18-5 run. This allowed them to take the lead into halftime.
San Antonio eventually ran out of gas in the fourth quarter. Detroit outscored them 22-12 in the fourth, leading to the Spurs’ second loss of the Summer Legaue.
Dominick Barlow once again shined for San Antonio, leading the team with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Barlow continues to show why he should be signed to at least a two-way contract with the Spurs or another team.
Sir’Jabari Rice played in his first Summer League game after missing the first five games with iron deficiency. He scored 11 points on four for eight shooting.
Blake Wesley scored 10 points, but continued to struggle with his shooting. He went 3-17 from the field. Wesley still has a lot to prove and will more than likely start the season with the Austin Spurs of the G-League.
The Spurs were unable to slow down fifth overall pick, Ausar Thompson. Thompson had 18 points and 14 rebounds in the Pistons’ win.
With the loss, San Antonio now moves to the consolation bracket. The Spurs move to 4-2 overall this summer and 2-2 in Las Vegas. San Antonio will take on the Oklahoma City Thunder Sunday, July 16 in their last 2023 Summer League game.
