In honor of the NBA’s 75th anniversary season, Nike has unveiled new Nike NBA Classic Edition uniforms. The purpose of these jerseys is to recognize the three franchises that have been part of the league since the beginning: the Boston Celtics, the New York Knicks, and the Golden State Warriors. True to the original 1946 designs, the jerseys replicate their old versions, however, in an updated and modern way.
“Retro uniforms are nothing new in basketball. What is new is how the Nike NBA Classic Edition uniforms intersect with such a pivotal moment in the league’s history,” Elesban Montoya, Design Director for Nike Basketball uniforms, said in a press release. “A big reason for the merger’s success was the fan support. So this is our spin on historic uniforms, but it’s also an emblem of respect for the fans who rallied for their teams and showed up for the league over the years.”
All three uniforms have the classic Nike Futura logo, the first time the mark appears on an NBA jersey.
Here’s a closer look at the new threads for each team:
Golden State Warriors
The “Warriors Origins” uniforms will be worn throughout the 2021-22 NBA season and feature a blue jersey with blue shorts along with yellow and red trim and red and white numbers. Before the Golden State Warriors, the team was originally known as the Philadelphia Warriors. These uniforms are an updated look on the ones worn during the 1961-62 season, the final season that the Warriors would play in Philadelphia before moving to California.
New York Knicks
The Knicks uniforms feature the classic words “New York” on the front of the jersey with the dark blue numbers. The jersey is a clean white and has a blue and orange trim along the sides. Aiming to replicate the authentic 1946 jerseys, these threads use larger-scale numbers which were prominent in the older jerseys.
Boston Celtics
The Celtics uniforms are very similar to what the team wore back in 1946. Both the “Celtics” script and number are green on the clean white jersey. There’s also a shiny touch on the green trim, making the jersey pop. In addition, the shorts feature a white four-leaf clover that gives the uniforms a modern aesthetic.
