Spanish big man Pau Gasol announced his retirement from the NBA and professional basketball in October of 2021. Now, the team on which he made a name for himself, the Los Angeles Lakers will honor him by retiring his number, 16.
Southern California News Group’s Kyle Goon reported the news via Twitter on Tuesday afternoon.
Congrats to Pau Gasol on his retirement. The Lakers intend on retiring his jersey in the future.

Gasol won two NBA championships with the Lakers in 2009 and 2010. Along with Kobe Bryant, Gasol and the Lakers also went to the 2008 NBA Finals, losing to their bitter rival, the Boston Celtics. The Lakers would get their revenge in that 2010 season/finals.
He was also a six-time All-Star, Rookie of the Year in 2002, a three-time Liga ACB (Spain) Champion among many, many other accomplishments. The former third overall selection is a sure-fire Hall of Famer-caliber player and will have his number in the Lakers rafter forever. It is unclear at this time when the retirement ceremony will take place.
