Coulibaly may have been overshadowed by his teammate, Victor Wembanyama, but he has a lot to offer himself. He is also a 2023 NBA Draft prospect.
He started playing professionally in 2021 for the Metropolitans 92 U21 team. His play earned him a spot on the senior team in 2022-2023. Coulibaly averaged 11.0 points and 4.2 rebounds for the senior team during the 2022-2023 season.
Along with his teammate Wembanyama, Coulibaly entered the 2023 NBA Draft. He is currently projected to be a first-round pick.
Bilal Coulibaly Strengths
Coulibaly has the greatest potential on the defensive side of the ball. He has good footspeed and is lanky enough to play good perimeter defense. What makes his defense so intriguing is that he should be able to guard multiple positions and switch with ease in ball screen situations. When he is playing defense off of the ball, he shows good awareness and help for his teammates.
His athleticism helps him on both ends of the floor. Coulibaly has the footspeed to stay in front defensively and can contest shots with his length and leaping ability. On offense, he can be a threat in transition, as he runs the floor well. He can also get to the basket and finish because of his athleticism.
He has the ability to get to the basket and finish over bigger defenders. As mentioned, he can get up the floor in transition and finishes well. In the half-court offense, he can drive to the basket in a straight line and finish or can do a good job of cutting and getting open layups.
Bilal Coulibaly Weaknesses
Coulibaly does not have the greatest ball-handling ability. He lacks the ability to create space for himself off the dribble. Coulibaly should not be isolated with the ball in his hands very often. He will need to become a more reliable ball handler in order to be trusted with the ball in his hands on offense more.
He is a solid passer, but is far from a great creator. As mentioned, he struggles to create for himself. He also doesn’t force defenses to help on him and free up his teammates. Coulibaly averaged 1.4 assists per game last season and had more turnovers than assists. He needs to put more pressure on defenses by creating more.
His 3-point shot is still a work in progress. He shot 34.2 percent from the floor this season. Coulibaly shot better off the catch than the dribble, but both percentages will need to increase for him to truly stretch a defense out.
Projected Draft Range: First-Round Pick
