The San Antonio Spurs’ 2023-24 season tips off on October 25 against the Mavericks. Of course this will be the NBA debut of Victor Wembanyama. The Spurs should improve on their 22-60 record last season, but expect them to have another lottery pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. Here is a preview of the 2023-24 season.
Notable Games
The full Spurs’ schedule can be seen in the Twitter link above released by the San Antonio Spurs themselves.
The Wemby affect is already showing as the Spurs have 19 nationally televised games, up from just four games last season. San Antonio starts their season on October 25 where they will host Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks on ESPN. This is a true test to start the season and will feature two of the best foreign players in the NBA.
Other notable matchups include every In-Season Tournament game which starts with the Timberwolves on November 10. It continues on November 14 where two of the youngest teams will face off when the Spurs travel to Oklahoma City to take on the Thunder. San Antonio then plays the Kings on November 12. They then finish group play with a trip to the bay area to take on the Warriors.
We will see Wemby take on another former hyped prospect in LeBron James for the first time on NBA TV on December 13 and again on ESPN on December 15. This will be the first time the two generational prospects match up against each other.
The top two picks in Wemby and Brandon Miller will face off against each other for the first time on January 12. This game will can be seen on ESPN.
Players to Watch
Of course the main player that everyone around the NBA will be watching on San Antonio this season will be Victor Wembanyama, but their are other players that have a chance to break out this season.
One of these players in Devin Vassell. Vassell could make the leap to possibly being an All-Star and Comeback Player of the Year candidate this upcoming season. Vassell dealt with a knee injury must of last season, but still played well, averaging a career high 18.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 3.6 assists. He is arguably the second best player on the Spurs behind Wemby heading into the season.
Another player to watch is Keldon Johnson. Johnson has been the Spurs’ best player the last few seasons and could be in the conversation for an All-Star appearance this season.
Jeremy Sochan and Malaki Branham are also worth watching. These two former first round picks from the 2022 NBA Draft should make a huge leap this season with Branham possibly becoming a full-time starter and Sochan competing for Defensive Player of the Year as him and Wemby could become one of the best defensive frontcourts in the association.
Overall
Don’t expect the Spurs to make the playoffs, but do expect them to win more games than last year and possibly be like the Thunder from a year ago and fight for a Play-In berth. They brought back all of their roster from last season and brought in a few guys from trades. They also brought in a generational talent in Wemby.
Although they didn’t sign anyone huge in free agency this year, if Wemby and the team plays well this season, they have a ton of cap space to sign a big name next offseason. They also may have a chance at another top five pick in next year’s draft.
A solid prediction for the San Antonio Spurs’ 2023-24 record is 35-47, increasing their win total by 13 games from last season’s 22.
