There has been a lot of talk since the MLB lockout as to what the New York Yankees may do. Rumor has it, according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman, the Yankees may go after Freddie Freeman. Freeman was one of the players of interest for the Yankees. Here are Freeman’s stats.
Freeman’s Minor League Career
Freeman was drafted in the second round by the Atlanta Braves in 2007. He made an impact early in his baseball career, leading the GCL Braves in games (59), at-bats (224) and home runs (6). He also ranked second in hits (60), runs (24), doubles (7) and RBIs (30).
In 2008, he played some A ball for the Rome Braves in the South Atlantic League (SAL). He averaged .316 with 18 HR, 95 RBIs, 46 walks, 84 strikeouts and a .899 OPS.
Freeman won several awards the same year. He won the SAL Mid-Season All-Star Award, along with earning back-to-back SAL Player of the Week Awards in July 2008. Freeman was named a SAL Post-Season All-Star for the Rome Braves, along with a Baseball American High-Class A All-Star.
In 2010, Freeman was named INT Post-Season All-Star for the Gwinnett Braves, a Triple-A team. He also received the INT Rookie of the Year Award the same year.
Overall, Freeman averaged .303 with 51 HR, 277 RBIs, 138 walks, 273 strikeouts and a .839 OPS in 434 minor league games.
Freeman’s Major League Career
He made his MLB debut on September 1, 2010 going 0-for-3. He played 19 other games that season, averaging .167.
His career batting average is .295 with 271 HR, 941 RBIs, 776 walks, 102 intentional walks, 1,312 strikeouts and a .893 OPS. Freeman spent his entire career with the Braves Organization.
Freeman’s best offensive year was 2020, although it was a shortened season. Freeman hit .341 with 13 HR, 53 RBIs, 45 walks, 37 strikeouts and 1.102 OPS. Wow! This is incredible, but it was only 60 games. Still, these were some pretty good numbers.
Besides the limited amount of playing time in 2020, Freeman had several really good seasons hitting at or above .300 five other times. His league rankings are great as well. In games played, Freeman ranked in the top 15 seven years in the National League. He also ranked in the top 25 in doubles for eight seasons. Other rankings he has accomplished were being within the top 20 in hits for eight seasons.
Post-Season Stats and Awards
Just because a player does good in the regular season, doesn’t mean he is good in the post-season. This wasn’t the case, as Freeman shows he has skills anywhere. His career average is .290 with 23 runs, 9 HR, 20 RBIs, 24 walks, 37 strikeouts and a .916 OPS in 42 games.
Freeman won several awards for his batting average, along with earning three Silver Slugger Awards. He was in five All-Star Games and won five NL Player of the Week Awards.
Freeman also won three Monthly Awards, one for July NL Rookie of the Month and two for NL Player of the Month in September 2016 and September 2020. He won the 2018 Home Run Derby as well.
Freeman has won so many awards and they are not just for his offense. He has a Gold Glove Award and won the 2018 and 2019 Wilson Defensive Player of the Year Award for first base. Freeman is top-10 in putouts for 9 seasons. He is currently fourth for active players.
Also, Freeman has a World Series under his belt. The Braves won the 2021 World Series against the Houston Astros in six games. Although Freeman wasn’t MVP, he did average .318 with two HR, five RBIs, two walks and a .996 OPS in six games.
The Yankees really do need a first baseman and Freeman is looking like a good option. If he gets added to the Yankees’ roster, he will be another left-handed bat in the lineup. Will the Yankees finally budge after being silent pre-lockout? The only thing anyone can do now is to wait.
