The news that everyone in baseball has been waiting for has finally dropped. Arguably the biggest free agent in the history of the game has decided to stay on the West Coast with the LA Dodgers. Shohei Ohtani Signs with the Dodgers
Mark Feinsand confirms that Shohei Ohtani Signs with the Dodgers. This is easily the biggest contract in the history of baseball and is the biggest contract in sports history. With a record AAV of $70 million, the two-way pitcher will be paid for being one of the best in the game at hitting and pitching.
This has been the contract and signing that everyone in baseball has been waiting for. Not only the fans but also the executives have been in a holding pattern. Now free agency will really begin for the MLB.
Luckily for Ohtani, he will only be moving down the street as he has spent his entire MLB career with the Angels. Now their crosstown rivals have taken the best player in baseball and signed him to the biggest sports contract ever.
What does Shohei Ohtani to the Dodgers mean?
This contract will be discussed and likely used as a major reason why baseball should have a salary cap. There is no doubt that most of the teams in baseball could even conceive of a contract this large. Ohtani will be making more than at least seven different MLB teams’ entire payrolls, at least as of the time of writing this.
Some major clubs were entertaining paying quite a bit for Ohtani. Many thought that $600 million was overreaching and apparently the Blue Jays had considered signing him for that much. It was met with some speculation. It seemed as though the Dodgers were not going to let him slip through their fingers.
Now it will be interesting to see how the rest of baseball reacts and what the rest of the Dodgers roster will look like.
