Free agent right-handed starting pitcher Sonny Gray officially has a new team. He is signing a three-year, $75 million contract with the St. Louis Cardinals, who floundered last season. He spent his last two seasons with the Minnesota Twins.
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported that the deal was being finalized via Twitter on Monday.
Gray is a three-time All-Star and has finished in the top-five in Cy Young voting three times, albeit without a win. Weighing innings pitched and games started against overall ERA, 2023 was his best season as a pro in his 11-year career.
In 32 games last year, Gray had an ERA of 2.79 over 184 innings pitched. While only going 8-8 in the win-loss column, he led the entire league in FIP and home runs per nine innings. He finished as an All-Star, second in AL Cy Young voting and 18th in AL MVP voting.
