The San Diego Padres lost three games in a four-game series against the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Padres only scored 10 runs in four games throughout the series.Â
In the first game of the series, starting pitcher Joe Musgrove received his first loss of the season. He gave up six runs in six innings. The six runs are the most runs he has given up in a game this season. Musgrove had pitched 12 straight quality starts in a row before this outing. He also only had one strikeout in the game. The one strikeout is the lowest strikeout total he has had in a game this season.Â
The Padres lineup was unable to get much going in the game, but there were a couple of bright spots. First baseman Eric Hosmer went 2-for-4 with a home run, and catcher Austin Nola had two hits. The Padres lost this game 6-2.
The next game for the Padres had a better result than the first game.
Although the offense did not produce much, just like the previous game, the pitching was much better in this one. Starting pitcher MacKenzie Gore rebounded after two rough outings in a row against the Colorado Rockies. Gore pitched in five innings without giving up a single run. He only gave up three hits and had four strikeouts. This outing dropped his ERA to 3.34 on the season.Â
The only run scored by the Padres came in the bottom of the sixth inning. Austin Nola hit an RBI single against his brother, starting pitcher Aaron Nola. This one run in the game was just enough for the Padres to win 1-0. Taylor Rogers was able to close out the game, although it took him 29 pitches to get through the ninth inning.
The next game in the series was a close one, but the Padres did not come out on top. Starting pitcher Blake Snell was not awful, but he was not great either. He pitched in five ⅔ innings and gave up four runs.Â
The Padres’ offense could not do enough to deal with those four runs given up.
Because of this, the Padres lost this game 4-2. Snell earned his fifth loss of the season, and his record on the season is now 0-5. Unfortunately, he did not get much help from the Padres’ offense, as they scored two runs on four hits.Â
The next and final game was somewhat close, but the pitching was not good enough to keep the Padres afloat in this one. The Padres were doing well early on, and they took a 5-3 lead into the seventh inning. The Padres bullpen then proceeded to give up five runs to the Phillies in the last three innings.
Yu Darvish started the game for the Padres and pitched a solid six innings. Darvish gave up three runs and threw nine strikeouts. Unfortunately, the bullpen came in and gave up five runs to blow the lead. Some of the hitters were solid in this game, with Hosmer going 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Shortstop C.J. Abrams had a double and an RBI as well in the game. However, the game resulted in a Padres loss with a score of 8-5.
The Padres currently have a 45-30 record. The team is in second place in the National League West division, 1.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, the Padres do hold the top wildcard spot in the National League.
