The San Diego Padres split a four-game series against the San Francisco Giants in a home series at Petco Park.
The Padres looked to recover from their first home series of the week when the team was swept by the Seattle Mariners in two games.
Padres fans were able to watch their team get off to a hot start in the series against the Giants. The Padres won the first two games of the series, and it seemed like they would end up at least winning the series. Unfortunately, the Padres lost the final two games of the series and had to settle with a series tie.
The first game of the series was a close, low-scoring game that did not conclude until the 10th inning. Starting pitcher Joe Musgrove, who had been incredible this season up until his last couple of outings, was dominant in this game. Musgrove pitched in seven innings and gave up no runs on only one hit. He did give up four walks in this outing, but none of the walks proved to be detrimental.
Third baseman Manny Machado hit his 13th home run of the season in the fourth inning.
The Padres had a 1-0 lead going into the top of the ninth inning, and relief pitcher Taylor Rogers came in to close out the game. Unfortunately, he gave up a run to blow the lead and force Musgrove to settle for a no-decision. The game went into the 10th inning tied 1-1. Jorge Alfaro came in to pinch-hit in the bottom of the 10th inning. Alfaro proceeded to single to deep center, allowing shortstop Ha-Seong Kim to score the walk-off run. The Padres won the game 2-1.
The next game did not go into extra innings, but it was still a solid result. Starting pitcher Blake Snell had a stellar outing, pitching six innings and only giving up one run. He also had 11 strikeouts in the game.
A few of the Padres bats were on fire in this game. Machado hit yet another home run, with this one being a three-run home run in the first inning to give the Padres a quick 3-0 lead. Second baseman Jake Cronenworth went 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI in this one. The Padres won the game 6-3, and Snell received his first win of the season.
The next game in the series was a close one, but the Padres were unfortunately on the losing end in this one.
Yu Darvish started the game for the Padres and had a solid outing. Darvish went seven innings and only gave up one run. Unfortunately, relief pitcher Luis Garcia came on the mound in the eighth inning and gave up two runs.
The Padres offense was unable to get much going in this game, and they were unable to recover after Garcia gave up the two runs. The Padres lost the game 3-1.
The next and final game of the series was horrendous for the Padres. MacKenzie Gore started the game for the Padres and gave up eight runs in three ⅓ innings. The relief pitchers were unable to provide much relief, as they gave up four runs throughout the rest of the game. The Padres lost this game 12-0.
After this series, the Padres are even further behind the Los Angeles Dodgers for first place in the National League West division. However, the Padres are still currently the second NL Wild Card team.
The Padres will be facing the Colorado Rockies in Denver for their next series.
