Achieving 2000 career hits is a task that takes longevity, durability, and an incredible talent for hitting. Considering the average MLB career lasts just 5.6 seasons, a player must play over double the average career and average a hit a game in order to reach the 2000 career hit mark. There are just four active hitters that have reached the 2000 career hit milestone.
Andrew McCutchen, 1997 hits
Andrew McCutchen is going to hit this mark within a few more games. The 2000 hit mark seemed out of reach for Cutch for a bit of his career, as he wasn’t an everyday player when he played in Philadelphia with the Phillies. Across three seasons, he totaled just over 200 hits. At the age of 35, he was still 175 hits away from reaching the milestone.
Following a good season in Milwaukee where he registered 122 hits, Cutch headed home to Pittsburgh in what many seen as a wholesome story to finish his career where he started. And then he got off to his best start in 6 years. He has 49 hits in 50 games and is hitting near .280. The celebration will commence when Andrew McCutchen tallies his 2000th career hit, deservedly so.
Freddie Freeman, 1982 hits
Freddie Freeman has been on a tear as he approaches the 2000 hit milestone. He recently lost a 20-game hit streak in which he hit nearly .500 over the course of the streak. The former Brave finished the 2022 season with a career high 199 hits. Freeman has gotten off to an even better start in 2023 as he did in 2022.
As Freeman inches closer to this milestone, Dodger games will become more and more exciting to watch. At just 33 years old and hitting nearly .340, Freeman will definitely have a chance to achieve upwards of 2500 career hits, joining an even more exclusive club. Freddie Freeman is one of the league’s best hitters and when he reaches 2000, he will become 1 of 2 active lefties in the 2000 hit club.
Jose Altuve, 1947 hits
Jose Altuve has the least amount of plate appearances on this list by a wide margin. He’s been to the plate 1300 times less than McCutchen and 60 times less than Freeman, which truly shows the caliber of hitter that Altuve is.
For his career, Altuve is hitting .307 which leaves him in elite company among baseball’s all-time greats. Altuve registered 4 seasons with over 200 hits. Altuve missed the beginning of the season with a wrist injury suffered in the World Baseball Classic. Since his return, he has been back to form. He will definitely reach this milestone. Keep an eye out for Altuve to contend for 2500 career hits one day.
