The MVP award is given out each year to the best performing player in each league in the MLB. There are many talented and deserving players in the National League this year. Here are the 2023 MLB NL MVP Rankings for the month of June.
Pete Alonso, 1B, New York Mets
Avg: .238
OBP: .335
SLG: .558
HR: 20
RBI: 46
2B: 4
K/BB: 48/26
WAR: 1.9
Pete Alonso has one call to fame this season. His power. But his power has been so substantially next level that he has been able to find himself up with the top players in the National League despite his low batting average. Even with his batting average below .250, he still has an OBP .100 points higher than his average. With that, Alonso is still able to have an OPS near .900.
The only thing that will keep Alonso in this race is his home runs. He is going at an astounding pace, with 20 long balls in his first 200 at bats. At that pace, if he tallied 600 at bats, he would close in on 60 home runs. If he is able to tally 60 home runs, lead the Mets to a playoff spot, and hit over .260, he could be a dark horse to win this award.
Ronald Acuna, OF, Atlanta Braves
Avg: .324
OBP: .406
SLG: .554
HR:11
RBI: 31
2B: 16
K/BB: 34/29
WAR: 2.9
To say that Ronald Acuna has been incredible in 2023 would be an understatement. Acuna has completely taken over the National League. He has the potential to hit 40 home runs and steal 40 bases. There are only 4 players in MLB history that are in the illustrious 40/40 club, Jose Canseco, Alex Rodriguez, Alfonso Soriano and Barry Bonds. If Acuna is able to become the 5th, he is a lock to be the 2023 NL MVP.
Acuna ranks in the 100th percentile in xwOBA, xSLG, and xBA. He consistently barrels baseballs unlike anybody else in the game with an average exit velocity of 95.1 MPH. That’s the best mark of his career including a max exit velocity north of 116 MPH. The 25-year-old is a generational talent. If he can stay healthy and consistent, this is his award to lose.
Freddie Freeman, 1B, Los Angeles Dodgers
Avg: .346
OBP: .416
SLG: .589
HR: 10
RBI: 35
2B: 23
K/BB: 41/27
WAR: 2.7
There isn’t a player in the MLB that has shown the ability as a pure hitter quite as well as Freddie Freeman has. He currently has a 19-game hitting streak, which is the longest active streak in the MLB. His ability to use all fields to pepper base hits as well as hitting with power is incredible. Freeman is the best first baseman in the MLB and 2023 is showing that there is a large gap between him and whoever number two would be.
His .330 batting average and .400-plus OBP doesn’t tell the whole story with Freddie Freeman. Freeman is the best player on one of the best teams in the game. His name is going to be mentioned with this award for the majority of the season, if not the entire season.
Prediction: Ronald Acuna, OF, Atlanta Braves
Ronald Acuna is the clear front runner for this award so far. Not only is he almost a lock to join the 30/30 club, but he could join baseball history with 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases. This isn’t just a good season for the Braves outfielder, it’s a legendary one. Barring any injury, Ronald Acuna will continue to be great and he will win the 2023 MLB NL MVP award.
