Sibling rivalry is back in a brand new light. Brother’s War is the newest Standard set for Magic: the Gathering and players are excited to get a glance at the latest cards. On Thursday October 27, Wizards of the Coast premiered a new announcement stream that highlighted all the important beats from Brother’s War. In that broadcast viewers were given a sneak peek at just a few of the cards they can grab in the new expansion. Here’s everything you need to know from the announcement stream, just in case you missed it.
Mechanics
Each expansion in Magic: the Gathering typically ushers in a new mechanic to add a bit of flavor to the new cards. For Brother’s Ward however its introducing just one new keyword, but it is welcoming back three familiar mechanics that players have seen in the past.

Prototype
In Brother’s War players are going to see just one new keyword, but it sure is a powerful one. “Prototype” allows players to play cards for cheaper with diminishing effects. For Phyrexian Fleshgorger, players can opt to cast his creature for 3 mana and gain a 3/3 instead of paying seven for a 7/5. The card will have all other keywords in it’s text box regardless of how it was cast. For example, whether a player pays three or seven, Phyrexian Fleshgorger will always have Menace, Lifelink and Ward.
Powerstones
Powerstones are relatively new, but they were first introduced in the previous set of Dominaria United. Karn, Living Legacy is the first card that could create Powerstone tokens, though at the time it seemed as though the tokens were a bit underpowered. However it may just be that all of the initial predictions were wrong. Powerstones are going to be a big part of Brother’s War as it is shaping up to be an artifact heavy set. Powerstones are tokens that produce one colorless mana that can not be used to cast nonartifact spells. These can still be used for activating abilities though, so Urza, Powerstone Prodigy can make use of the token pretty easily.
Unearth
Artifacts so nice you want to see them twice. Unearth is back for Brother’s War, meaning players will want to keep track of those graveyards pretty closely. To Unearth a creature, it’s controller must pay the Unearth cost while the creature is in the graveyard. That creature is then exiled once it leaves the battlefield.
Meld
Making it’s way back from Innistrad, Meld is returning to Brother’s War for just three cards. Players must control both cards in order to Meld them, and neither can be a token or a copy in order to Meld.
Return of the Painlands
The Painland cycle returned in Dominaria United, but is now finally being completed in Brother’s War. The two-colored lands will help even out the mana base for Standard decks as many players are sure to explore some multi-colored deck lists.
