On Sunday, May 28, 2023, a historic vote was cast by LCS players, led by the LCS Players Association, to decide whether they would stage a walkout. Effectively, they would be the first esports professionals to go on strike. While this has happened in major sports, specifically in the United States, it is not something that has been seen in esports at any major level. On that Sunday, the LCSPA announced that the vote had “overwhelmingly passed” and many had wondered what that meant.
The answer according to sources, is that 90%+ of players voted in favor of the walkout. This would certainly justify the use of the phrase, “overwhelmingly passed”.
But now questions may start to revolve around why some players decided either not to vote or to vote against it. According to these same sources, there were a few different reasons.
They ranged from the players being scared of their vote getting leaked to voting making them uncomfortable. Along with this, some players were afraid they would get fired. And lastly, some were actually just undecided and preferred not to vote.
This may not come as a shock to many people but at least the explanations are out there. With both sides discussing what the next steps look like as they try to come to a resolution, it is true that the players stand mostly united in making changes.
