Arguably the biggest addition to League of Legends in 2023 was not any champion, skin or even the item changes. It was the addition of Arena as a new mode and one that looks to be a permanent game mode moving forward. There is a major change coming to the mode in 2024 that was announced by Riot Games during their annual Season start video. LoL Arena will Update from 4 Teams to 8.

LoL Arena Update Teams to 8
The LoL Arena Update of teams from 4 to 8 is a pretty big deal.
One of the major reasons why is that you will have more teams to face. While this may seem simple and not all that big of a deal, it is a big change. Players will be able to dodge teams that are causing them issues or not be able to play against teams that they counter hard.
Along with this, it aligns the game to be much more like TFT but for League of Legends. At least in terms of the tertiary aspects of it. With eight teams, plus augments and rounds, this truly feels like a true combination of TFT and League of Legends.
Does this mean Arena is a Permanent Game Mode?
This does not mean that Arena is a permanent game mode. At least not yet.
It feels like they are planning for Arena to be a permanent game mode in the future. They are not committing to it until they feel comfortable that the player base will continue to play it. At least, that is the way it feels. So until then, it will be a rotating game mode.
There is a good chance that it does get added considering how much time they are spending on fine-tuning it and talking about it. New game modes are clearly a major focus for the League of Legends team moving forward and it feels like the next TFT could be right around the corner in terms of a mode becoming its own game.
