Counter Logic Gaming’s 2020 LCS season came to a close on Sunday, August 9, when they lost their tiebreaker match versus Dignitas. One day later, CLG released coaches Ssong and Weldon, as announced on Twitter.

Although sudden, the release itself is not surprising. 2020 has had the worst results in CLG’s history, with the team finishing tenth and ninth in Spring and Summer Splits. The organization signed Ssong as Head Coach at the beginning of the year. They signed Weldon as Head Coach in 2019, before promoting him to League of Legends Division Coach this year.
CLG had several performance issues over the course of 2020. At the start of Spring Split, they announced the same roster as 2019, except Crown to fill PowerOfEvil’s mid lane spot. This roster started the split 1-7, before CLG replaced Crown with Pobelter in Week 5. He helped them gain 2 more wins, finishing the season 3-15.
For Summer Split, CLG announced the same starting roster, which included Pobelter in mid lane. Again in Week 5, despite the better 4-4 start, CLG tried Academy top laner Deus. In Week 9, after a six-game loss streak, they tried Fragas and Tuesday. However, only one of those four games resulted in a win. They finished the Summer Split 5-13.
Coach Weldon responded to CLG’s announcement with his own tweet, stating “So I am suddenly unemployed in LA with a family of 6 after taking a paycut + moving debt to come work at CLG. Anybody need end-of-season help? Looking for instant intermittent work.” His contract was supposed to last until November 16, 2021, according to Riot Games’ Global Contract Database.
