Creative Director Ed Boon takes to X, formerly known as Twitter, and posts a picture of iconic horror movie villains such as Leatherface, Jason Voorhees, Chucky, Michael Myers, Ghostface, Freddy Krueger, Pinhead, and Jigsaw.
The caption does not say anything but features two emojis; a dragon, which could reference the dragon being the symbol of the Mortal Kombat games. And a thinking emoji which could be Ed Boon thinking about who to place in the roster.
In the photo there are green checkmarks over Freddy Kruger, Leatherface, and Jason Voorhees. This can be a little confusing for players new players who have not played Mortal Kombat 9 or Mortal Kombat X. But Freddy Krueger was a playable character in Mortal Kombat 9 and both Leatherface and Jason Voorhees were playable in Mortal Kombat X.
While there are green question marks over Chucky, Michael Myers, Ghostface, Pinhead and Jigsaw. Potentially indicating that these franchise villains could make an appearance as DLC in Mortal Kombat 1.
The history of media characters in Mortal Kombat
This news should not be too surprising since this is not the first time horror villains or other media protagonists and antagonists have made an appearance in Mortal Kombat.
Netherrealm Studios has their fair share of iconic movie characters, villains, and even non-human characters featured in their game as playable characters. They have included video games as well.
They take characters from different forms of media and despite not coming from overly violent movies and television shows, like Mortal Kombat, and find a way to implement them in game while staying true to the character.
These characters include Kratos from the “God of War” series in Mortal Kombat 9 and Preadator and Alien in Mortal Kombat X. The previous installation, Mortal Kombat 11, featured perhaps the most media characters from various franchises such as RoboCop, John Rambo, The Joker from DC, The Terminator, and Spawn.
Regardless of how people felt about these characters in the game, there is no denying that they are major representations of different media and prove that games like Mortal Kombat can take characters from their respective media and give them representation outside of their own.
The continuation of various faces making an appearance
It only keeps going with the recent announcement of Kombat Pack 1, which will feature new characters such as Omni-Man from “Invincible”, Homelander from “The Boys”, Peacekeeper from DC. All from different forms of media.
It is hard to say if Ed Boon is just teasing fans or is seriously planning ahead for future DLC despite Kombat Pack 1 being announced and no one from that announcement is playable yet. Regardless, fans are excited that characters from violent forms of media are being represented in Mortal Kombat, which is arguably one of the most violent fighting games out with gruesome fatalities and brutalities.
However, based on previous characters in Mortal Kombat, fans can rest assured that the characters chosen will stay true to the media they came from and will resonate with fans of the various media. The game is very early in its life stage, and fans are already excited for the DLC that are coming, perhaps this game will feature many DLC characters throughout its longevity.
