Over the last few weeks, our staff has compiled a lot of posts covering questionable Madden 19 ratings. Every team has been covered, but who were the players that Madden was the most incorrect on? This post will cover the most overrated NFC players with excerpts from our articles covering specific teams.

Jordan Reed, TE, Washington Redskins

“While Jordan Reed’s athleticism and potential are undeniable, he has one fatal flaw. He simply cannot stay healthy. So, a player with his injury-riddled past should have one of the lowest “injury” ratings on the team. However, Reed was assigned an 80 in that category.

That makes him tied with Orlando Scandrick as the fifth most likely player to be injured on the team. In that context, his rankings make sense; however, it didn’t impact his overall rating, which is a 94. We’ve all heard the famous NFL cliche, “the best ability is availability”, and that’s something Reed flat out lacks. At best, Reed’s overall rating should be an 89 to reflect his overall inconsistency, instead of being ranked as the third best tight end behind Rob Gronkowski and Travis Kelce.” -Braxton Angle

Ha-Ha Clinton Dix, S, Green Bay Packers

“Clinton-Dix has played in every game since he was drafted in 2014. Taking the Packers’ ridiculous and shocking injury history into consideration during that time-frame, that is enough to have him ranked near the top of their defensive players.

An 87 is generous for a free safety that was a big part of the 23rd-worst pass defense in the NFL. He had three interceptions last year, which is not good, but not embarrassing. What is embarrassing, however, is the fact that he had a combined five yards on those interceptions.

For a player that is supposed to thrive on operating in space, that is not great. Certainly not worthy of a rating three points shy of 90. On top of that, he only had six passes defended, no forced fumbles and no touchdowns in 16 games.”- Ben Hendricks

Randy Gregory, DE, Dallas Cowboys

“Gregory has not played since 2016 and only played two games that season. He is currently filing for reinstatement into the league after violating the substance abuse policy multiple times. Madden still rates him though, as he could be reinstated. His rating is a 76.

While Gregory did show promise in his 14 career games, he hasn’t played in over a year and has just one career sack. This rating makes him better than Jaylon Smith and Anthony Brown, both of whom have contributed and played decently well.” -Joe DiTullio

Richard Sherman, CB, San Francisco 49ers

“This needs to be prefaced with the fact that Richard Sherman deserves a lot of respect. The man was the face of the Legion of Boom for years. But, there is a reason the Seahawks did not want him anymore. He has regressed. The fact that Madden made him a 90 overall and the best overall player on the 49er’s team is ridiculous.

Last season Sherman was barely above average at the cornerback position. Pro Football Focus gave him an 82.7 which is again, not terrible, but not what we are used to out of him. This in part was because he just wasn’t the same player. Sherman had two interceptions last season and they both came in one game against the Texans. Outside of that he also had his lowest passes defended at only 7. He has never had less than 11. Let’s not forget that he is also coming off an Achilles tear which as we have seen in the past is not easy.

Sherman is still a solid cornerback option but, he’s not the best player on the 49er’s and he is not a 90 overall. He is closer to an 84/85.” -Rob Hanes

Jake Ryan, LB, Green Bay Packers

“Jake Ryan is a fine player. He is an alright piece that probably fits best as a backup linebacker. Considering the Packers current state of affairs on the defensive side of the football, he has been thrust into a starting role in Green Bay.

The run-stopping ability is there, but the pass-rush ability is lacking severely. In 43 games played, he has recorded only one sack. His tackling numbers actually took a hit last season, even though he played and started in more games than he did in 2016. He also has no interceptions, and only one forced fumble to his name in three years.

Thus, a 78 is too high. Other Packers with this rating include veterans like Tramon Williams and Lance Kendricks. Comparatively, Ryan is not as good or as valuable to the team as either of these players.

It is possible Madden is grading on potential, here. But with this upcoming season being his fourth in the league, the team should know they are not going to get splashy numbers from Jake Ryan and accept him as a third down run-stopping specialist.” -Ben Hendricks
