After its conclusion, Evo made the announcement that Evo returns to Japan in 2023. They’ll be returning to Japan on Mar. 31 and ending on Apr. 2 in Tokyo, Japan.
Normally Evo is an American event that takes place on the west coast of the U.S. However, after its first introduction in 2018, Evo Japan became an annual event alongside the main Evo tournament series. The last Evo Japan was in 2020, on Jan. 24-26 just before the COVID-19 virus became a huge pandemic worldwide. This made Evo Japan 2020 the last offline Evo tournament before Evo 2022.
The event will also be offline and at Tokyo Big Sight, a convention center in Tokyo, Japan. Tokyo Big Sight also has the official name of the Tokyo Internation Exhibition Center.
Tournament Lineup
Several of the main lineup tournaments were also announced. Including titles such as Guilty Gear – Strive-, The King of Fighters XV, Street Fighter V: Champion Edition, and Tekken 7. These were also the most popular games at Evo 2022, having the most player registrants.
More games and other events will be available with announcements in the coming months. Likely other popular fighting games such as Melty Blood: Type Lumina, Soul Calibur VI, and many more.
Evo General Manager Rick Thiher had words to say for the announcement. “It is joyous having Evo Japan return to Tokyo for the global fighting game community,” said Thiher. As well as praising Japan for the roots of fighting games. “Japan is the birthplace of competitive fighting games and we can’t wait to open the doors at Tokyo Big Sight next spring to celebrate their legacy with players and fans,” Thiher said.
Hopefully, with the current state of travel opportunities, anyone who wishes to attend will not have an issue. It’s likely the event is being held later than usual to allow people to have the chance to apply for Visas. Currently, Japan is not available for independent travel.
Evo Japan, without surprise, has many of its registrants being local to Japan or from neighboring countries in Asia. However, some international players from Europe and the Americas make their way to the tournament.
The latest news will be on the event’s official website evojapan.gg. The event’s official Twitter and Youtube channel will also have the latest news available.
