Lewis was the second-longest tenured head coach behind Bill Belichick. He had a 131-122-3 record with the Bengals over 16 seasons with the franchise. While he did revitalize a team that was one of the worst franchises in football throughout the 1990s, Lewis was highly criticized for never winning a playoff game for the Bengals.
Cincinnati hired Lewis as a former defensive coordinator from the Baltimore Ravens.
