Fantasy stats based around 4 points per passing TD and 0.5 points per reception.
There are two main approaches when look at fantasy player scoring trends. The first is to see how that player is performing from an output perspective. The second is to look at how their upcoming opponent has performed.
This article leans heavily on Fantasy Points Against (FPA). This number measures the total fantasy points given up per game to a position group by a defense. Other stats referenced may come from sources including Pro Football Reference, Pro Football Focus, and Football Outsiders.
STARTS:
Jared Goff
There weren’t very high hopes for Jared Goff coming into the season even though the Rams were seen as playoff contenders. His numbers have been steadily disappointing only going over 20 points three times.
Goff faces a flimsy Seattle defense that has allowed the most FPA to quarterbacks this season. They have also conceded five top 12 quarterback finishes. The Seahawks have also allowed the fourth most yards per attempt with 8.1.
Goff isn’t an appetizing starter but quarterbacks and wide receivers have performed well against Seattle this season. Teams missing Mahomes, Watson, or Matt Ryan can look to Goff for a spot start.
Derek Carr
The Las Vegas Raiders also have a pivotal divisional matchup against the Denver Broncos. The Broncos have an endearing story with a bunch of underdog players competing in big spots. This could be another close game.
Derek Carr fortunately goes against a Broncos defense that has allowed the 8th most FPA to quarterbacks. Denver has also allowed five top 12 quarterback performances. Coming into this week, the Broncos had just given up 275+ passing yards and 3 passing touchdowns.
Carr doesn’t have the flashiest weapons but he’s got a good matchup and can also be streamed at quarterback.
SITS:
Kirk Cousins
The Minnesota Vikings and Kirk Cousins have been picking up steam. Consecutive divisional wins make a playoff appearance seem more possible. Bad news for Cousins is he faces one of the toughest defenses in the league.
The Chicago Bears will have a national stage to flex their strong pass defense. They have allowed the fewest FPA to quarterbacks and only one top 12 quarterback finish. No quarterback has thrown for more than two passing touchdowns nor has any quarterback scored 20+ fantasy points.
Cousins has played well enough to be a fringe roster spot on fantasy teams. He is absolutely unstartable against Chicago this week.
Cam Newton
The New England Patriots survived a scare against the New York Jets on Monday Night Football in Week 9. They have been largely unimpressive as a team and get a tough draw in Week 10.
Cam Newton will lead the charge against the Baltimore Ravens. The Ravens have only allowed two top 12 quarterbacks. Strangely, however, the Ravens have allowed the 12th fewest FPA to quarterbacks. They had epic meltdowns against Patrick Mahomes and Carson Wentz but haven’t allowed over 20 fantasy points to any other quarterbacks.
Fans across the country would like to see a Cam Newton bounce back second half but it won’t start this week.
