Having a good fantasy draft sets a team up really well, but most of the time to win a fantasy football league, acquisitions need to be made during the season. Each week there are several players worth exploring on the waiver wire. Here are fantasy football players to add week 9. (Note: These are best used for standard scoring leagues. All players are owned in less than 50 percent of ESPN leagues)
1. Khalil Herbert, RB, Chicago Bears
Herbert has been on this list in previous weeks, but has stayed mostly not rostered in ESPN leagues. He is splitting time with David Montgomery in the Bears’ backfield. Even with that, he has been productive as the 14th-ranked running back at the position. He rushed for 99 yards on 16 carries for one touchdown in week 8.
The Bears have focused on running the ball and Herbert has thrived. His role may be increased if Montgomery misses more time or if the team decides to deal him before the trade deadline. Herbert’s value would then skyrocket. He is currently rostered in 47.7 percent of ESPN leagues.
2. Latavius Murray, RB, Denver Broncos
The Broncos have had several injuries at the running back position, which has opened up an opportunity for Murray. With Javonte Williams and Mike Boone both getting injured, Murray has split time with Melvin Gordon. He is still learning the system but had 14 rushes for 46 yards and one touchdown to go with one catch for 13 receiving yards.
With Boone on IR and Williams out for the season, Murray has a chance to get work and maybe even take over the backfield in Denver, as Gordon has been benched before this season. He has already played well and is worth adding, even if he isn’t someone that is trusted to start on a week-to-week basis yet. Murray is rostered in 32.8 percent of ESPN leagues.
3. Isiah Pacheco, RB, Kansas City Chiefs
Pacheco was named the starter for the Chiefs before week 8. He rushed eight times for 43 yards in that game against the 49ers. Pacheco did see more snaps, but the numbers still have to show up. That will come with time.
The Chiefs are coming off a bye, which came in week 8. That is more opportunity for Pacheco to get used to the offense and for him to take on his new role. He should be added for now and stashed until he starts producing. Pacheco is rostered in 24.3 percent of leagues.
4. Rondale Moore, WR, Arizona Cardinals
Moore has been more involved in the offense recently after missing the first few weeks of the season. He had seven catches for 92 yards and a touchdown against the Vikings in week 8. Moore also had two carries for 12 yards.
With Marquise Brown injured, Moore is a bigger part of the offense than projected. Brown will at least miss a few more weeks, which gives Moore a big opportunity. He will likely see more targets in the next few weeks. Moore is available in 53 percent of ESPN leagues.
5. Chuba Hubbard, RB, Carolina Panthers
Hubbard missed week 8 after injuring his ankle. He is still likely going to receive carries when he returns, even with D’Onta Foreman playing well in his absence. In week 7, he had 63 rushing yards and a touchdown to go with two catches for 10 yards.
It isn’t likely that Hubbard will be out too much longer. He should be added now before he is fully cleared, as he could get an opportunity to get a decent amount of carries in the Panthers’ backfield. He is rostered in 34.9 percent of ESPN leagues.
