Having a good fantasy draft sets a team up really well, but most of the time to win a fantasy football league, acquisitions need to be made during the season. Each week there are several players worth exploring on the waiver wire. Here are fantasy football players to add week 1. (Note: These are best used for standard scoring leagues. All players are rostered in less than 50 percent of ESPN leagues)
1. Josh Palmer, WR, Los Angeles Chargers
Palmer has been a decently productive receiver for the Chargers over the last few season. In 10 games played last season, he hauled in 38 passes for 581 yards and two touchdowns. The year before that, he had 72 receptions for 769 yards and three touchdowns.
There is going to be more opportunity for Palmer this season. Keenan Allen and Mike Williams are now on new teams. Ladd McConkey was drafted, but he may take a while to get going, as he is a rookie. The Chargers may run the ball more, but Palmer is going to be a more featured part of the passing attack when they do throw. He is rostered in just 37.1 percent of ESPN leagues.
2. Andrei Iosivas, WR, Cincinnati Bengals
Iosivas was a rookie for the Bengals last year. The fifth-round pick played more than expected and did well with his time. He had 15 catches for 116 yards and four touchdowns, filling in during injuries and even some times when the Bengals had all their receivers healthy.
Tyler Boyd is now with the Tennessee Titans, opening up the WR3 spot for the Bengals. Iosivas was named the WR3 to start the season over rookie Jermaine Burton. For the early part of the season, Iosivas has more value than Burton, although Burton has more potential long term this season. Ja’Marr Chase is in a contract dispute so the Bengals will have to use other receivers if he doesn’t suit up. Iosivas is owned in just 1.9 percent of ESPN leagues.
3. Kendre Miller, RB, New Orleans Saints
Miller was a rookie last season, but was only able to play in eight games. He rushed for 156 yards and a touchdown. Miller hauled in 10 passes for 117 yards as well. He’ll be looking to build on that this season for the Saints.
To start this season, Miller will be on the IR with a hamstring injury. While he’ll miss the first four games of the season, he can be stashed in the IR spot on fantasy teams. When he returns, he’ll be behind Alvin Kamara and Jamaal Williams, but he will likely get some opportunity. If there is no one in a team’s IR spot, Miller is worth hanging on to. He is rostered in just 18.4 percent of ESPN leagues.
4. Kimani Vidal, RB, Los Angeles Chargers
Vidal was a sixth-round pick by the Chargers in this year’s draft. He played his college football at Troy, where he rushed for over 4,000 yards. In college, he also had 700 receiving yards.
With the Chargers, Vidal enters a team that will be more focused on running the ball. Gus Edwards and J.K. Dobbins are ahead of him on the depth chart, but Dobbins has struggled with injuries throughout his career. There is a chance Vidal eventually takes over for both. It could be worth taking a flier on Vidal before he breaks out. He is rostered in just 3.7 percent of ESPN leagues.
5. Justice Hill, RB, Baltimore Ravens
Justice Hill has been with the Ravens for four seasons. He has had a limited role, as he has 934 rushing yards and 354 receiving yards in his career. Hill has had some good games when given the opportunity.
While the Ravens did sign Derrick Henry, Hill can still have a role in the backfield. He will likely handle passing downs for the Ravens. His role will be bigger earlier in the season, as another running back Keaton Mitchell is on the IR to start the year. Hill is rostered in over 96 percent of ESPN leagues.
