Welcome back to the latest edition of Sunday Morning Stashes here on The Game Haus, where I talk about just a few names to scoop up before the action this week (assuming you have the bench space of course). Last week I was a fumble away from nailing two potential adds and I’m hoping to improve on that percentage this week. Marvin Mims saved the slate by hauling in his pair of targets for 113 yards – the highlight of which was his 60-yard catch and run touchdown.
[In case you Missed it: Week 3 Stashes]
This week I’m taking a look at some of the more familiar names around the fantasy community that haven’t quite been useful in starting lineups. But these are stashes and not mandatory waiver adds. If they don’t come though again, feel free to kick them right back to the curb. Some rostered might have extra space now with Sunday morning injury reports coming though, and can afford to take the shot at potentially grabbing a key free agent a week early.
Sunday Morning Stashes for Week 3
Jonathan Mingo, WR Carolina Panthers
12% Rostered on ESPN
The second round pick out of Ole Miss was primed to be an immediate contributor in this relatively weak wide receiver room in Carolina. With another rookie in Bryce Young at quarterback, there was a glimmer of hope that these two would sync up and have some instant-rookie type chemistry that would make them both fantasy relevant. Sadly that hasn’t really panned out they way we all thought. Despite eight targets in Week 2, Mingo isn’t quite there in terms of fantasy value.
However this is pretty common with rookie wide receivers. It takes time to acclimate to the speed of the NFL, and usually younger receivers start to come alive as the year continues. We very much could see a big game from Mingo against a relatively weak Seattle passing defense.
The one caveat is that this week Carolina will be rolling with Andy Dalton at quarterback while Young nurses an ankle injury. Often times a veteran quarterback will have a better fantasy performance when replacing a rookie, but it is tough to determine where their targets will go. Dalton was able to keep Chris Olave’s fantasy numbers up last season, hopefully we see that happen with Mingo this week as well. if Mingo does break out this game, then this stash will help you save some crucial FAAB heading into Week 4.
Chigoziem Okonkwo, TE Tennessee Titans
30% Rostered on ESPN
It feels silly to refer to Chig Okonkwo as a stash, but right now he’s still widely available in ESPN leagues (in Sleeper he’s 86% rostered, 48% rostered on Yahoo). As a rookie he displayed some explosiveness and showed some promise as the next important name to remember at the TE position. When the Titans added DeAndre Hopkins in the offseason, it hurt his stock just a bit but not enough to scare drafters away. The tight end position is always a crapshoot and Okonkwo at least proved he had some upside with his big-play ability.
Through the first two weeks of play, Okonkwo has not been as good as advertised. Watching his games however, it’s clear it’s less of a Okonkwo problem as it is a Tannehill problem. The Titans passing attack has struggled, and Ryan Tannehill is not playing as tight as he has in the past.
The reason for hope is Week 2 output for Chigoziem was solid and could serve as an indicator of more utilization going forward. I’d check ton see if Okonkwo is sitting out there on waivers this week to grab him for later. He might not have the best game against a tough Browns defense, but a bounce back game in Week 4 could be in the cards.
Clyde Edwards-Helaire, RB Kansas City Chiefs
7% rostered on ESPN
Now here’s a name I’m sure some dynasty players could forget. CEH came into the league as a first-round draft pick by the Chiefs as a player they thought could be a three-down player. In his rookie campaign he seemed, okay-ish if not a little disappointing. As a smaller back he lost a lot of touches at the goal line to backups, and we as a community learned that Mahomes doesn’t love throwing the ball to running backs – unless their name is Jerrick McKinnon. Then the Chiefs drafted the angriest runner known to man in Isiah Pacheco, sending Edwards-Helaire to the back of the depth chart.
The reason I want to grab CEH this week is to see his usage with Pacheco’s questionable status thanks to a lingering hamstring issue. If Pacheco is out today, CEH could actually be a spot starter against a horrid Bears defense. Then if Clyde can get the job done, instill some confidence into his coaching staff, it could sway the Chiefs to rest Pacheco for a few weeks to fully recover. If this series of events does occur, then you may have gotten a free starting running back. CEH is a big “wait and see” type of add, but if Pacheco is all good and runs today, we can say goodbye to Edwards-Helaire once again.
