The Game Haus will be analyzing the player ratings from Madden 19 of every NFL team. Madden has a daunting task of rating all NFL players and their attributes. While they have the ability to correct some of these rankings with in-season roster updates, there are some issues with some of the initial rankings of players. This article will look into the head-scratching Madden 19 ratings for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Calais Campbell
At an age where players typically tend to slow down, Calais Campbell did just the opposite. Coming off the best season in his 10-year career, Campbell led all defensive lineman in sacks and second overall with 14.5. He also finished fourth among defensive ends in combined tackles with 67, including 47 solo tackles and three forced fumbles. One would think those stats, combined with the pressure Campbell puts on the quarterback every snap, would land Campbell a spot in the top five in madden ratings among defensive ends. Instead, Campbell is ranked just outside it with a rating of 92. The only player with more tackles that is ranked higher than him is Khalil Mack.
This just does not make sense and the only explanation would be he will be 32 when the season starts. Campbell is almost always healthy, playing in 16 games seven out of 10 years, and never less than 13. After a career year, age cannot be the excuse for him not cracking the top five. Not to mention the NFL Top 100 this season has Campbell listed as the second-best defensive lineman.
Blake Bortles
After leading the Jaguars to AFC Championship game, a game they nearly won, Madden has Blake Bortles listed at 22 among quarterbacks with a rating of 80. Bortles isn’t worthy of an 80 yet. While Bortles was behind center for the AFC runner-ups, they didn’t get that far exactly because of him. Bortles did throw 3,687 yards, but his completion percentage was just 60.2, albeit, the best of his career. The offense was fueled by power back Leonard Fournette. The defense also did a great job at providing the team with good field position.
Bortles threw for a mere 21 touchdowns while adding on 13 interceptions as well. His weak receiving core did not provide too much help, but the fact that defenses had to worry about Fournette every play helped make up for that. Bortles can continue to improve and can carry the Jaguars deep into the postseason for the second straight season, but for now, his rating is a bit too high.
Austin Seferian-Jenkins
In Austin Seferian-Jenkins’ fourth season, he had himself a miniature breakout year. His stats were hindered from playing for a weak offense on a bad Jets team. He still managed to haul in 50 receptions, good for 357 yards and three touchdowns. These numbers were good enough to place Seferian-Jenkins tied for 21st among tight ends with an 81 overall rating. Seferian-Jenkins has improved his run blocking ability over the offseason, a focus of his, and a 60 rating in that category does not accurately represent his skills. With Marcedes Lewis gone, Seferian-Jenkins should be the number two option to find the end zone behind Fournette. His offense continues to improve in the passing and running game and his rating won’t be an 81 for long
Adjusted Rankings
Calais Campbell: 95
Blake Bortles: 78
Austin Seferian-Jenkins: 83
