The final day of Call of Duty Major V Toronto is all we have left after Saturday’s matches were completed. The third day of the tournament was fun to watch but there was similar problem to Friday, none of the matches were really that close. Besides a 3-1 series between Atlanta Faze and Toronto Ultra that boasted multiple close maps, every other series was a 3-0.
As the tournament comes to a close Sunday, here is a look at how each of the five matches played out on Saturday.
Recap
Losers Bracket Round 2: (6) Las Vegas Legion v. (7) New York Subliners
Legion squared off against Subliners in the first of five matches Saturday. Although it is Major V, Legion had its eyes set on a bigger goal, qualification for CoD Champs. It was a must win series to keep their chances of a spot at Champs alive. The match opened up on Embassy HP where Paco “Hydra” Rusiewiez shined. Hydra ended the map 30-16, a 1.88 K/D. Hydra has been one of the best players in the league since he joined, his dominance continued into the map 2 as well. He finished the search and destroy with a 12-4 record, equal to a 3.0 K/D. When Hydra is shooting like that there is little the opposing team can do. Legion’s chances looked slim after going down 0-2 to an in-form NYSL and their inability to consistently perform in control. The map 3 went in a way that is rarely seen, the first four rounds all went to the offensive team. In the round 5 NYSL proved their talent as they once again won an offense and took the series 3-0. Unfortunately for Legion, they are out of Major V but also miss out on a spot for CoD Champs as well. An immediate question being asked by the community after their exit, was that the last time we see James “Clayster” Eubanks play on the mainstage?
Winners Bracket Round 2: (5) Minnesota ROKKR v. (8) Florida Mutineers
The CoD community expected this series to be a close one and it did produce good moments. On map 1 Fortress, the two squads went back and forth the entire distance until ROKKR eventually locked down P2 and won the map, 250-224. In map 2, Florida started out hot but could not maintain that momentum as Minnesota continuously found the first blood with grenades. They won the map 6-3 behind a 10-5 record from Kevin “Fame” Bonanno. Underdog story Mutineers looked to be down and out of the winners bracket as they entered map 3 down 0-2 in the series and they were. ROKKR were to clinical on the tougher offensive side and were able to steal two rounds. Ultimately, they won the map 3-1 and sent Mutineers to the losers bracket while they advanced to the Winners bracket final.
Winners Bracket Round 2: (2) Atlanta Faze v. (3) Toronto Ultra
Two of the game’s top teams faced off against each other in the middle of the Saturday with a spot in the Winners final at stake. Ultra were heavily backed by their home crowd as they made their feelings of distaste known when Faze was introduced to the stage. Heading into Saturday’s matches, this was the one everyone had circled. Both teams boast players that are amongst the top of the league in talent and this match had fireworks written all over it. The first map proved just that as the two teams threw punch after punch at each other and eventually, Faze pulled away on the P2 hill. The heavyweight bout continued as the teams traded rounds back and forth in the map 2. In the end, round 11 for the map, Ultra found the first blood and were able to use numbers to win the round. With the series tied 1-1, the two teams met on Expo for map 3. Faze dominated the map as everyone of their players went positive and all of Ultra ended negative. The map 4 Hotel picked up right where the first two maps left off. The two teams went neck and neck all the way to the P5 restaurant hill and Faze took control to win the map 250-242 and the series 3-1. That win pushed Faze into another winners bracket final and sent the home team to the Losers bracket to face Los Angeles Thieves.
Losers Bracket Round 3: (7) New York Subliners v. (8) Florida Mutineers
Florida Mutineers final tournament of the year ended the way we have seen from them before. Round 1, Mutineers pull a big upset and then, they basically fall off a cliff. When Minnesota ROKKR swept Mutineers earlier in the day in winners bracket, fans feared New York would run them over. Kenyen “Capsidal” Sutton was Mutineers best player throughout the weekend and he showed that in this series as well. He single-handedly kept Florida in the first map and almost carried them to a win but eventually they lost, 250-236. After a close first map, Mutineers form fell of drastically. They went on to lose the second map 6-2 and the final map 3-2. Mutineers are not in a CoD Champs qualifying spot so their season is over. For the New York Subliners, a top 4 finish and potentially more is all you can ask for. This win pushes them further into the Losers bracket round 4, one win away from the Losers bracket final.
Losers Bracket Round 3: (9) Los Angeles Thieves v. (3) Toronto Ultra
The final series of Saturday was high-intensity although it did end in a sweep. The two teams squared off three times on Hotel and Ultra got the best of them. In map 1, Ultra’s superstars Thomas “Scrappy” Ernst and Tobias “CleanX” Juul Jonsson took over. While their two teammates went negative, they combined for 70 kills and a 1.38 K/D. In map 2, Ultra continually looked in command but Thieves kept hanging around. The map went to a last round and ultimately, Ultra clutched up to take a 2-0 series lead. The same sort of storyline continued in the third map. Ultra looked to be the better team, but Thieves would not go away easily. A mixy few rounds and Ultra again, were composed with better teamwork and came out on top 3-1 , winning the series 3-0. LAT bows out of the tournament Top 6 after winning the previous Major. For Ultra, their losers bracket run goes on as they will continue to have the home crowd completely behind them.
A Look Ahead
Although Saturday’s matches were once again over quicker than expected, they still produced high-intense drama. Along with that, we are now 75% complete through the weekend and Championship Sunday is all that remains.
Sunday will play host to four matches as four teams remain. Atlanta Faze, Minnesota ROKKR, New York Subliners and Toronto Ultra/ Los Angeles Thieves are the squads that will be vying for the Major V tournament championship in Toronto. These will be the league’s last four matches before the Call of Duty Championships are held in Las Vegas, June 15-18.
This is how the schedule looks for Sunday.
Winners Bracket Final: (2) Atlanta Faze v. (5) Minnesota ROKKR, 1:30 pm est.
Losers Bracket Round 4: (6) New York Subliners v. (3) Toronto Ultra, 3:00pm est.
Losers Bracket Final: Winner of LBRD4 v. Loser of Faze/ ROKKR, 4:30pm est.
Grand Final: Winner of Faze/ROKKR v. Winner of Losers Bracket Final, 6:00pm est
Prediction
The Atlanta Faze look to be back to the form that everyone knew eventually was going to come. I believe they will beat the Minnesota ROKKR in the winners bracket final and move to the grand finals. The Toronto Ultra, with the support of the home crowd, will defeat NYSL and then ROKKR in the losers bracket final. Those victories will set up a Grand Final between Faze and Ultra for the Major V title. Faze have been to clinical and after proving they can win close maps against Ultra on Saturday, they will beat them again. Give me Faze to win the final series 4-2. They will be the first team in Modern Warfare II to win two major tournaments.
