The college football season is approaching. There is always debate over ranking the best players in the sport. Here are the top 25 college football tight ends heading into the 2024 season.
Note: While projection of what a player can be is considered, most rankings are from what has been seen on the field. These are not NFL Draft rankings, but rather focus on the best players in college football.
25-21
25. Joshua Simon, South Carolina Gamecocks
Simon was highly productive at Western Kentucky, then took a bit of a dip in production last year at South Carolina. He caught 28 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns.
24. Luke Hasz, Arkansas Razorbacks
Hasz had a solid freshman season at Arkansas with 16 catches for 253 yards and three touchdowns. He could be a key to Bobby Petrino’s offense having success in his first year as the Arkansas offensive coordinator.
23. Colin Weber, Charlotte 49ers
Weber was a productive tight end, but didn’t get much coverage at Charlotte. Last season, he had 34 receptions for 362 yards, but failed to reach the end zone.
22. Harold Fanin, Bowling Green Falcons
Fanin was a highly productive tight end last season for Bowling Green. He hauled in 44 passes for 623 yards and six touchdowns, proving to be a matchup problem in the MAC.
21. Jack Velling, Michigan State Spartans
Velling started his career at Oregon State and followed head coach Jonathan Smith to Michigan State. He has 719 yards over two seasons in college.
20-16
20. Benjamin Yurosek, Georgia Bulldogs
In several seasons at Stanford, Yorosek has been productive, as he has 1,342 receiving yards in his career. He may be in a different role at Georgia, where he will be playing with other talented tight ends.
19. Ben Brahmer, Iowa State Cyclones
As a freshman last season, Brahmer caught 28 passes for 352 yards. He was also playing with freshman quarterback Rocco Becht, so the duo could grow together in year two.
18. Justin Joly, NC State Wolfpack
Joly was at UConn last season, where he hauled in 56 passes for 578 yards and two touchdowns. Now he joins NC State, who has plenty of receiving talent and quarterback Grayson McCall to improve their offense.
17. Jalin Conyers, Texas Tech Red Raiders
Conyers started his career at Arizona State, where he had two straight seasons with over 350 receiving yards. He’ll now be with Texas Tech and should be a featured part of their offense.
16. Rivaldo Fairweather, Auburn Tigers
Fairweather found success early on at FIU and that carried over to Auburn last season. He totaled 38 catches for 394 yards and six touchdowns.
15-11
15. Maliq Carr, Houston Cougars
After the 2023 season, Carr decided to leave Michigan State with a new coach coming into the program. He joins Houston after a year when he caught 30 passes for 352 yards and three touchdowns.
14. Kole Taylor, Wes Virginia Mountaineers
In his first year in the program, Taylor had 35 receptions for 444 yards and four touchdowns. West Virginia has a weapon in Taylor and that could lead them to a second-straight bowl game.
13. Mason Taylor, LSU Tigers
With 762 receiving yards in his first two seasons at LSU, Taylor has been a big part of the offense. That could increase this season with a new quarterback and pass-catchers around him.
12. Brant Kuithe, Utah Utes
If it seems like Kuithe has been in college for a while, it’s because his first season was in 2018. He will likely pass the 2,000-yard receiving mark this season for Utah, a feat that isn’t common for tight ends.
11. Corey Dyches, Cal Golden Bears
Dyches started his career off as a wide receiver, but then moved to tight end at Maryland. He has two-straight seasons with over 490 receiving yards as he now joins Cal.
10-6
10. RJ Maryland, SMU Mustangs
SMU is joining the ACC this season and they will be aided by having one of the best tight ends in college football. Maryland had 38 catches for 518 receiving yards and seven touchdowns last season.
9. Amari Niblack, Texas Longhorns
Niblack had 327 receiving yards for Alabama in 2023 and now joins Texas. He will be hoping to replace Ja’Tavion Sanders and help the Longhorns return to the CFP.
8. Bryson Nesbit, North Carolina Tar Heels
Nesbit was great target for Drake Maye to throw, as he had two straight 500-yard seasons. Now, he will have to work with a new starting quarterback, but he should be able to produce.
7. Tyler Warren, Penn State Nittany Lions
Warren has played with some other good tight ends during his time at Penn State, but did well last season. he had 422 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.
6. Oronde Gadsen, Syracuse Orange
Gadsen may play more like a wide receiver, but Syracuse lists him as a tight end. He had 975 receiving yards in 2022, but was hurt last season and only played two games.
5-1
5. Luke Lachey, Iowa Hawkeyes
The next great Iowa tight end who ends up finding NFL success might be Lachey. He was only able to play in three games due to injury last season, but has 662 yards in his career, even with Iowa’s offensive struggles.
4. Caden Prieskorn, Ole Miss Rebels
After having success at Memphis, Prieskorn followed that up with 30 catches for 449 yards in 10 games at Ole Miss. Ole Miss has plenty of pass catchers to utilize, which may end up freeing up Prieskorn more in 2024.
3. Oscar Delp, Georgia Bulldogs
Delp waited his turn behind Brock Bowers, but he’ll be joined by Yurosek this season. Despite being behind Bowers, he still played enough to register 284 receiving yards. If he takes over the Bowers role, he could have more than double the production.
2. Mitchell Evans, Notre Dame Fighting Irish
Evans is a great college tight end, even if there are some concerns about his NFL potential. He had 422 yards last season and made some pretty incredible contested catches in the process.
1. Colston Loveland, Michigan Wolverines
Michigan utilized Loveland heavily last season, when he finished the year with 45 catches for 649 yards and four touchdowns. He will have a lot of new faces around him, but Loveland is a known talent.
