McGuire started his career off as a high school coach in Texas. He has coached tight ends and defensive ends during his time in Waco, along with being the associate head coach for the last three seasons. He held that title even after a coaching change resulted in Dave Aranda taking over the Baylor job.
According to Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports, his ties in Texas and ability to recruit well in the state were what stood out to the decision-makers at Texas Tech.
Earlier in the season, Texas Tech fired Matt Wells after a 5-3 start to the season. It was rumored that they wanted a coach with more ties to Texas and they went in that direction with McGuire.
McGuire will be announced on Monday. The Red Raiders are currently 5-4 on the season with games against Iowa State, Oklahoma State and Baylor remaining on the schedule.
