Each week teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and beaten already on the field. Preseason rankings will not be taken into consideration here. Here is College Football Playoff Bracketology October 2.
CFP Four
1. Ohio State Buckeyes (5-0)
Ohio State didn’t have any trouble with Rutgers. The win over Notre Dame doesn’t look the greatest, but the Buckeyes are passing the eye test with flying colors.
This week: at Michigan State Spartans (2-3)
2. Alabama Crimson Tide (5-0)
Despite having starting quarterback Bryce Young go down with an injury, Alabama won and covered against Arkansas on the road. It was a sprained AC joint for Young, so the Crimson Tide may need to win some big games without him.
This week: vs. Texas A&M Aggies (3-2)
3. Georgia Bulldogs (5-0)
Georgia didn’t look good at all against Missouri, but escaped with the win. They also didn’t play their best against Kent State last week. They’ll have to figure things out before tougher SEC games arrive.
This week: vs. Auburn Tigers (3-2)
4. Clemson Tigers (5-0)
The Tigers notched their second straight big win with a victory over NC State. Pairing that with their win over Wake Forest and their undefeated record gives them the fourth spot in the rankings.
This week: at Boston College Eagles (2-3)
First Four Out
5. Tennessee Volunteers (4-0)
Tennessee did not play in week 5, but still has an impressive case for the CFP. They have defeated Pitt and Florida in four of their wins. They have a long way to go, but the Volunteers look like they could be in contention for another month or so.
This week: at LSU Tigers (4-1)
6. Ole Miss Rebels (5-0)
Ole Miss got their first big test of the season and passed it with a win over Kentucky. Things still look sloppy for the Rebels, but most importantly, they have stayed undefeated.
This week: at Vanderbilt Commodores (3-2)
7. Oklahoma State Cowboys (4-0)
The Cowboys avenged their loss in last year’s Big 12 Championship Game with a win over Baylor. Oklahoma State also looked good doing it and are now the frontrunners to win the Big 12 by a decent margin.
This week: vs. Texas Tech Red Raiders (3-2)
8. Penn State Nittany Lions (5-0)
It was a sloppy game against Northwestern, but it resulted in a win for the Nittany Lions. They have some decent wins over Auburn and Purdue this season and look like they could cause some problems in the Big Ten East.
This week: BYE
Next Four Out
9. UCLA Bruins (5-0)
The Bruins got a big ranked win over Washington on Friday Night. They are undefeated and defeating Washington gives them some legitimacy as it is now October.
This week: vs. Utah Utes (4-1)
10. USC Trojans (5-0)
USC won a late night game against Arizona State to advance to 5-0. Their run defense has been suspect, so they’ll need to improve that as they take on the rest of the Pac-12 schedule.
This week: vs. Washington State Cougars (4-1)
11. Michigan Wolverines (5-0)
Michigan defeated Iowa on the road by a decent margin. It is impressive because Iowa had the top defense in the country, but still won’t help their case for the CFP a ton yet.
This week: at Indiana Hoosiers (3-2)
12. Kansas Jayhawks (5-0)
Kansas kept their undefeated season alive after Iowa State missed a last-second field goal to tie the game. They have defeated West Virginia, Houston, Duke and now Iowa State in the last five weeks. The schedule gets tougher, but for now, Kansas deserves a spot in bracketology.
This week: vs. TCU Horned Frogs (4-0)
