1. Ryan Day Has Plenty of Work to Do to Save His Job
Ohio State was 10-1 heading into the game against Michigan, who was 6-5. The Buckeyes hosted the Wolverines and were nearly 20 point favorites. Things didn’t go a planned and the Wolverines won the game 13-10. While the Bukeyes are still likely to make the College Football Playoff, there are some legitimate concerns with the program.
A lot of those concerns start with the head coach. Ryan Day has gone four straight chances without defeating Michigan. He has no National Championships under his belt. The lofty standards at Ohio State may be forcing the program to make a change. While the school will likely wait until the season is over to make the move, anything short of a National Championship puts his job in question. The Buckeyes will need to play with a different aggressiveness in the CFP to win their games.
2. Arizona State and Iowa State Will Play in the Big 12 Championship Game
There were plenty of tiebreaker scenarios for week 14 to decide who would play in the Big 12 Championship. Early in the day, Arizona State did their part to make the conference title game by destroying Arizona. The Sun Devils finished the regular season with a 10-2 record.
Later in the day, Iowa State defeated Kansas State. They also finished with a 10-2 record. Who would play in the game was one of the biggest questions coming into the week. Six teams were alive for a spot going into the weekend and now Arizona State and Iowa State have locked those spots down.
3. The MWC Champion Will fill the Group of Five Spot
Heading into the week, there was a good chance that a team from the MWC would fill the group of five spot in the College Football Playoff. With the results of the week, that is almost guaranteed now. Boise State took care of business on Friday and the committee will likely keep them as the no. 4 seed.
Other results have made it clear that even if Boise State loses the conference championship game, the MWC will take the last spot. Tulane was within range to steal the spot if Boise State lost, but the Green Wave were upset by Memphis. UNLV was ranked 22nd last week by the CFP Committee and now will likely jump Tulane, meaning that the winner of the MWC will be in the CFP.
4. 11 Spots are Spoken for in the CFP
Through 14 weeks, several teams have locked up their spot in the College Football Playoff. Yes, there are only five-guaranteed spots in the CFP, but some teams have done enough already to all but guarantee they are in the CFP. Oregon, Penn State, Georgia, Texas, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Tennessee and Indiana make up seven of those teams.
Three spots will be taken up by the ACC Champion, Big 12 Champion and MWC Champion. SMU plays Clemson in the ACC Championship. Arizona State will square off with Iowa State in the Big 12 Championship. Boise State and UNLV will play again in the MWC Champion. That leaves one spot open for Miami, SMU (if they lose the ACC Title), Alabama, Ole Miss and South Carolina. How the committee ranks the teams this week will give a nod on which way they are leaning for who ultimately makes the CFP.
5. Travis Hunter has Locked up the Heisman
Colorado played Oklahoma State on Friday. They were still alive for the Big 12 Championship Game, so the game had plenty of importance. Travis Hunter had a fantastic game on both sides of the ball to help cement his claim for the Heisman. On defense, he had a tackle, one interception and two passes defended. Offensively, he caught 10 passes for 116 yards and three touchdowns.
The oddsmakers have taken note of his performances and have made him the heavy favorite to win the award. Ashton Jeanty will have one more chance to prove himself in the MWC Championship Game, but it would take a lot to sway voters in his direction. On the season, Hunter has 92 catches for 1,152 yards and 14 touchdowns. Defensively, he has totaled 32 tackles, four interceptions and 11 passes defended.
