Scott Satterfield is leaving the University of Louisville football program to become the head coach of Cincinnati, following Luke Fickell’s departure. Now, Louisville needs to do some searching for their next head coach, and possibly a culture change after Satterfield’s tenure disappointed.
Here are three possible head coach candidates for Louisville football.
Jeff Brohm
Jeff Brohm, currently the head coach at Purdue (since 2017), was born and raised in Louisville. He attended high school and college there, and was the quarterback of the Cardinals’ football team for two full seasons plus some spot starts.
In addition to being enshrined in the Louisville ring of honor, Brohm also began his college coaching career there. From 2003-2008, he held four positions on the coaching staff, including offensive coordinator. He’s gone just 36-34 in his tenure at Purdue, but that’s in a tough Big Ten. A return makes sense for both sides.
Brian Brohm
Jeff’s brother, Brian Brohm, is also a great candidate for this coaching spot. Like Jeff, Brian also was born and raised in Louisville. He attended high school there and became the Cardinals’ starting quarterback in 2005, collecting a larger resume as a starter than his brother.
His college coaching resume is scant as of now. He was the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach with his brother at Western Kentucky, following Jeff to Purdue in 2017 and holds the same two positions. But, if Jeff doesn’t want to leave then Brian brings the same knowledge of Louisville’s culture and interest in bringing the program back to relevance.
Scott Frost
Scott Frost is currently unemployed following his firing as Nebraska’s head coach in September of 2022. His playing career in college began at Stanford, before he transferred to Nebraska and spent three years (one redshirt season) in Lincoln.
He began his coaching career in 2002 at Nebraska as a graduate assistant. Frost then bounced around to four different school becoming the head coach in Lincoln in 2018. His head coaching record is 35-38, but he does have an undefeated season under his belt with UCF in 2017. This is a bit of a hopeful hire, but due to Satterfield’s exit so late in the season, it’s one of the better choices with some upside.
