The 2021 NBA Draft will be an important event for teams to build for their future. Here is the Nah’Shon “Bones” Hyland 2021 NBA Draft Profile.
Nah’Shon “Bones” Hyland Background
Position:Â Guard
Size:Â 6-foot-3, 169 pounds
School:Â VCU
Class:Â Sophomore
2020-21 stats: 19.5 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 0.2 blocks, 1.9 steals, 44.7% FG, 37.1% 3PT, 86.2% FT
Hyland didn’t play at a power conference program, but still was able to make a name for himself at the college level. He is now a coveted 2021 NBA Draft prospect.
In the 2019 recruiting class, Hyland was a four-star recruit who chose to go to VCU. For his first season with the Rams, Hyland averaged 9.0 points on 43 percent shooting from the floor. VCU went 18-13, but the postseason was canceled due to COVID. Hyland was one of the most improved players in the country when he came back for his sophomore season. He averaged 19.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game last season. His play helped the Rams go 19-7 and make the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
Following the season, Hyland declared for the 2021 NBA Draft. His stock has risen and now he is a potential late first round pick.
Strengths
Hyland has great shooting abilities. He shot 43.4 percent from 3-point range as a freshman, which was actually better than his overall field goal percentage. His 3-point percentage dipped to 37.1 percent as a sophomore, which is still really good. That is especially considering that he was the focal point of most defenses. His free throw percentage increased from 66.7 to 86.2 percent from his first year to his second. Hyland has the ability to shoot well off the dribble and off the catch.
He has a great ability to create separation off the dribble. Hyland can beat his man and get into the lane for layups. The most impressive thing about his game is the ability to create his own shot. He can set up his man and then clear plenty of space with a dribble move, most notably a step back. With his shooting ability, all he needs is a little bit of space to get his shot off.
His on-ball defense is great. During his sophomore year, he showed good anticipation and a solid understanding of how to jump into passing lanes. He averaged 1.9 steals per game, but also showed he could contest shots well too. At the NBA Combine, he measured in with 6-foot-9.25-inch wingspan, which helps him contest shots and rack up steals.
Weaknesses
Anytime a player has a nickname like “Bones”, they are really skinny. Hyland is a little undersized for a guard at 6-foot-3 and 169 pounds. While most see him as a combo guard, he was the third lightest player at the 2021 NBA Combine. Hyland needs to add some strength to help go up against NBA level athletes.
Hyland needs to take better care of the basketball. He averaged 3.1 turnovers per game and at times is sloppy with the ball in his hands. Defenses focused on him at VCU, but he needs to keep the ball moving to avoid unnecessary turnovers.
During his sophomore season, Hyland averaged 2.1 assists per game. He has the ability to make great passes, which was really on display during the NBA Combine, but he isn’t consistent with finding his teammates yet. A spread out NBA floor may help him create for his players, as it looked like he improved slightly during the NBA Combine.
Projected Draft Range: Mid to Late First Round Pick
