Freshmen in college basketball are becoming more and more skilled every season. In the upcoming 2021-22 college basketball season, many talented freshmen will surely have a big impact. In the Big East conference, there are several skilled recruits that could put the country on notice in their freshman season. Villanova, UCONN and Georgetown have some of the best incoming freshmen in the Big East. Who could be the top five most impactful freshmen in the Big East during the 2021-22 college basketball season?
5. Jordan Longino
According to 247 Sports, Jordan Longino is a four-star recruit ranked 50th nationally in the 2021 high school class. In addition, Longino is ranked as the 12th shooting guard in the country and is the 3rd best player coming out of Pennsylvania. He will be attending Villanova in his freshman season.
Alongside Villanova’s guards, Longino should fit in nicely. Shooting could be his greatest strength. To elaborate, Longino can shoot off dribble in an isolation or can knockdown shots in a catch and shoot situation. Also, his jump shot passes the eye test, his mechanics are sound. Longino even won American Family’s high school three-point shooting contest, which is a national contest.

4. Jordan Hawkins
In 247 Sports’ composite rankings, the four-star Jordan Hawkins ranks as the 49th player in the 2021 class. In the 2021 high school class, Hawkins is the 11th shooting guard nationally and the best player from Maryland. The young guard will play for UCONN in the 2021-22 college basketball season.
From DeMatha Catholic, Hawkins attended one of the premier high schools in the country. He has experienced plenty of tough competition during his high school career. Furthermore, Hawkins has good length alongside great athleticism. Consistently, he had highlight dunks demonstrating his impressive vertical. Hawkins has the potential to be a very solid guard as UCONN.
3. Rahsool Diggins
Another four-star recruit, Rahsool Diggins is ranked as the 46th player in the country. Further, Diggins is seen as the eighth best point guard in the 2021 high school class and is the second-best player out of Pennsylvania. Like Hawkins, he will attend UCONN in the upcoming college basketball season.
Diggins is exactly what a team wants in a point guard. He is a good ball handler, can pass well and has a good competitive spirit. In addition, Diggins has shown the ability to score at all levels by shooting well and finishing at the rim. UCONN has two young, talented guards in their 2021 recruiting class.
2. Trey Patterson
Ranked as the ninth-best power forward in the country, Trey Patterson is a high four-star recruit ranked 33rd in the nation. Patterson is the best player from New Jersey, making him one of the premier players from the east coast. Along with Longino, he is apart of the 2021 Villanova recruiting class.
With Jeremiah Robinson-Earl declaring for the 2021 NBA Draft, Villanova will need a new big man. Patterson does not bring the same skillset as Robinson-Earl, but should still be effective. He is very quick for a forward, allowing him to play on the wing as well. Also, Patterson’s driving ability is lethal since he has the threat of a good jump shot. He has the potential to be a star at the division one level, and could even have NBA potential.

1. Aminu Mohammad
As the lone incoming five-star in the Big East, Aminu Mohammed is ranked 19th in the 2021 high school class. Ranked second among shooting guards, elite talent clearly characterizes Mohammed. He will play for Georgetown in his freshman campaign.
Mohammed’s five-star rank is well-deserved. When driving, he is an absolute force. Whether it be in transition or off dribble in the half-court, staying in front of Mohammed is difficult. He has several dribble combos that allows him to create space. Mohammed’s most impressive attribute is his finishing ability at the rim.

Georgetown will have several lead-scorers to replace since Qudus Wahab transferred and the other four lead-scorers were seniors. Mohammed could bring instant offense to the table, and should mesh well with the guard Dante Harris.
Overall, the Big East has several talented players coming from the 2021 high school class. Teams like UCONN, with James Bouknight’s departure, and Georgetown need new production. Meanwhile, Villanova embraces the phrase “the rich get richer”. It is extremely likely there will be exciting new faces on Big East squads in the 2021-22 season.
