Alabama defensive lineman Quinnen Williams came out of nowhere this season to help Alabama reach the National Championship Game. He’ll now be in the 2019 NFL Draft after his dominant season.

2018 stats: 71 total tackles, 19.5 total tackles, eight sacks, one pass defended

Size: 6-foot-3, 303 pounds

Williams was a player that didn’t play a lot in 2017, but stepped up big time for Alabama in 2018. He was one of the most dominant players in college football and is now going to be coveted by a lot of teams in the 2019 NFL Draft.

In his career at Alabama, Williams had 91 total tackles, 26 tackles for loss, 10 sacks and one pass defended. Williams specifically showed the ability to be disruptive by stopping the run and eating up blockers. He played so well that he finished eighth in the Heisman Trophy voting, something that is rare for a defensive player. Simply put, Williams was the best player on an Alabama defense that made it all the way to the National Championship Game.

He may be a young player with only one big year of production, but Williams is one of the best players in the draft class. Williams will not have to wait in the “Green Room” for long before getting to shake the commissioner’s hand.

Strengths

Williams shows tremendous burst at the snap of the ball, starting off every play well. He often faces double teams, but can often times beat it or disrupt the play. At Alabama, he played multiple positions along the defensive line, but was mostly lining up right over the center or as a three-technique defensive tackle.

Against the run, Williams demonstrates great gap integrity and elite block-shedding traits. He uses his hands well to shed the blockers and then can make the play. Williams demonstrates his good motor and pursuit, as he finishes the play chasing after the ball carrier.

As a pass rusher, he can also shed blockers well and is great at using his powerful hands. He can push the pocket even when double-teamed. Williams has a wide variety of pass rushing moves at his disposal, which makes him a uniquely good pass rusher for a defensive tackle. His ability to get to the quarterback allows him to absolutely take over games.

Weaknesses

Alabama’s defensive line is always stacked with talent, but Williams was only able to have one great season of productivity. He is inexperienced with only two seasons played at the college level and he was only a starter in one of them. As teams get a chance to watch more and more tape, they could find more weaknesses to take advantage of over time. This did not seem to affect Williams as his dominant season went on.

Williams doesn’t have the great size and length to play defensive tackle at the NFL level. While he did a solid job at nose tackle in college, he likely can’t play the position in the pros because of those two traits not being ideal. He could also struggle with offensive linemen who have more length and strength once he gets into the NFL.

He was a great pass rusher at Alabama, but needs to have a better plan for getting to the quarterback at times. Sometimes his plan wouldn’t get him very far. If Williams adds more counters to his game and has a good plan for getting to the quarterback every play, he could be an even more effective pass rusher.
