Every NBA team would love to have Pelicans’ superstar Anthony Davis, but only a few teams have the assets to get him. The Boston Celtics, loaded with draft picks and young talent, arguably have the most to offer. Celtics star forward Jayson Tatum caused a stir on Twitter when responding to his name being thrown around in rumors.
In an interview with radio station 98.5 The Sports Hub, Justin Tatum, Jayson’s father, told host Cedric Maxwell he would give up his son in a deal.
“I would probably trade him too, if he weren’t my son,” Justin Tatum said.
On Tuesday, the sophomore player agreed with his father when asked about the comments saying “I’d trade me for Anthony Davis too.”
Despite heavy rumors, there likely won’t be any Celtics-Pelicans deal for Davis during the regular season. Because of the tricky “Rose Rule,” Kyrie Irving and Anthony Davis cannot be on the same team while on their current contracts. The Celtics could potentially trade for Davis in the offseason, and then have Irving re-sign with the team, as he is an upcoming free agent.
For Boston to land Davis, parting with Tatum may have to be part of the equation. Coming in third in Rookie of the Year voting last year, Tatum was huge during Boston’s trip to the Eastern Conference Finals.
This season, he is averaging 16.1 points and 6.4 rebounds per game, as the return of Gordon Hayward has slightly reduced his role.
While trading away Jayson Tatum would sadden many Celtics fans, the team still has another young wing in Jaylen Brown. If giving up Tatum means getting Anthony Davis, a generational player, the Celtics would be fools not to do it.
