The Game Haus will be analyzing the player ratings from Madden 19 of every NFL team. Madden has a daunting task of rating all NFL players and their attributes. While they have the ability to correct some of these rankings with in-season roster updates, there are some issues with some of the initial rankings of players. This article will look into the head-scratching Madden 19 ratings for the San Francisco 49er’s.
Richard Sherman
This needs to be prefaced with the fact that Richard Sherman deserves a lot of respect. The man was the face of the Legion of Boom for years. But, there is a reason the Seahawks did not want him anymore. He has regressed. The fact that Madden made him a 90 overall and the best overall player on the 49er’s team is ridiculous.
Last season Sherman was barely above average at the cornerback position. Pro Football Focus gave him an 82.7 which is again, not terrible, but not what we are used to out of him. This in part was because he just wasn’t the same player. Sherman had two interceptions last season and they both came in one game against the Texans. Outside of that he also had his lowest passes defended at only 7. He has never had less than 11. Let’s not forget that he is also coming off an achilles tear which as we have seen in the past is not easy.
Sherman is still a solid cornerback option but, he’s not the best player on the 49er’s and he is not a 90 overall. He is closer to an 84/85.
Joe Staley
The fact this man does not get more love is astonishing. He has been rock solid at left tackle for years. Many consider this to be the most important position on the line and Staley has proven time and time again that he can live up to the expectations.
Last season he was the second highest rated left tackle in the game according to PFF with and 87.4. He only allowed 4.5 sacks and you could argue at least a couple of them were not really on him (as is with most linemen). Making Staley only a 90 overall is not only an insult to him but the players above him as well. David Bakhtiari, Tyron Smith, Trent Williams, and Jason Peters are all great players and should be ranked higher than they are.
Give the man his dues, make Staley at least a 92.
Marquise Goodwin
This guy has a nearly 1,000-yard receiving season with C.J Beathard as his QB for a little over half of it and they make him an 83? That does not seem to make much sense.
Goodwin is a firecracker for this team. He gets the offense rolling with his speed. And while he did drop four balls his hands were normally consistent. The other mark against him was the fact that he only had two touchdowns. That being said he had 962 yards for a 17.2 average and 13 20+ yard plays. He is truly someone who suffered a bit from his circumstances. It is likely he will be the main target of Garoppolo as Pierre Garcon gets older. Lastly, why is Garcon rated higher than Goodwin?
Marquise Goodwin needs to be ranked much closer to an 86 after his breakout season.
Adjusted Ratings
Richard Sherman: 84
Joe Staley: 92
Marquise Goodwin: 86
