Since the highly anticipated PC release of “Baldur’s Gate 3” earlier this month, the “Dungeons & Dragons” based role-playing game has received critical acclaim across the board for its detailed environments, stellar voice acting, varied character customization and seemingly endless possibilities. It is the third main entry in the “Baldur’s Gate” franchise – a series that has not received a mainline installment in over two decades. In that time, “Baldur’s Gate” has shifted creative hands multiple times, with its first titles initially being developed by BioWare; this time around, Larian Studios has taken the reins, both developing and publishing “Baldur’s Gate 3.”
After a nearly three year early access period and a full Windows release almost two weeks ago, the game will not remain exclusive to PCs for long as “Baldur’s Gate 3” will be coming to consoles in less than a month.
“Baldur’s Gate 3” is slated for a PlayStation 5 and macOS release on September 6, 2023. Though, despite statements from the developers reassuring players that it is not their intention for “Baldur’s Gate 3” to become a PlayStation 5 console exclusive, Larian Studios has run into some technical difficulties in the process of bringing the tabletop-inspired adventure to the Xbox Series X|S.
Co-Op Play and Parity Problems
These technical difficulties are particularly concerning the split-screen co-op features and the parity release outline for both the Xbox Series X and Series S. Microsoft’s parity rules for both the Series X and S require that both versions of the game must essentially run at the same level of technical quality – even on the lower-powered, lower-priced Series S. “Baldur’s Gate 3” can not just release on Xbox Series X with a co-op feature and on Xbox Series S without it, nor just launch on the Series X only and completely gloss over the Series S.
Hence, an Xbox version of “Baldur’s Gate 3” was in the works and is, presumably, still in development from Larian Studios as the team works around Microsoft’s rules for its pair of consoles.
Additionally, taking into account Microsoft’s own engineers providing assistance in the creation of “Baldur’s Gate 3,” the game will most certainly arrive on Xbox eventually – just not alongside the PlayStation 5 on September 6.
September Is Shaping Up To Be A Huge Month
However, PlayStation owners are not the only ones receiving a huge, exclusive release on September 6. While PlayStation gamers venture out on their own quests in Faerûn, Xbox players and PC users are going to be launching into the unknown and exploring the furthest reaches of outer space in “Starfield” – another role-playing game hitting shelves the first week of September. And with “Phantom Liberty,” the first major DLC expansion for “Cyberpunk 2077,” and “Mortal Kombat 1” also arriving that month, September is shaping up to be a packed month for everybody.
