League of Legends added a new ranked tier: Emerald. This stands in between Platinum and Diamond, providing an extra step for players while simultaneously increasing the overall ranked inflation within the lower tiers.

The implementation of Emerald rank has players split. Some enjoying the new ecosystem, thanks to the ego boost of achieving a higher rank, while others are conflicted over getting kicked out of diamond.
Emerald rank inflates lower elo
“The amount of people feeling happy because they ‘FINALLY’ hit gold/plat after being ‘STUCK FOR YEARS’ is scary to me,” a Redditor stated, referring to the overall elo inflation having occurred this ranked split.
“Riot decided to give a big dopamine boost to people who were stacked for ages and made them feel better about themselves,” they continue, elaborating on the current predicament.
Ever since Emerald was implemented, it’s become substantially easier to reach Gold and Platinum — while Diamond has become a little more difficult. This is the main point of conflict for players.
As League of Legends is a competitive game, players often compare with one another using rank. And since elo has been inflated in the lower tiers, lower tier gamers’ egos were inflated as well. For gamers who previously achieved Diamond in the past year or so, they are undergoing a far more difficult time achieving the same rank.
“I myself am one of these people that got kicked out of diamond as I just there but now I want to defy riot and get back up there,” another player asserted, setting out to climb the ranked ladder once again.
Of course, various players have different opinions on the ranked changes. But it appears Riot achieved one of their supposed goals: “give a big dopamine boost to people who were stacked for ages and made them feel better about themselves.”
