The 2023 MLB season is warming up as pitchers and catchers have officially reported, and spring training draws closer. In this series of articles, TGH is going to be giving an early look at every team’s projected pitching rotations ahead of Opening Day on March 30. Here is the 2023 pitching rotation for the Boston Red Sox.
**Note: As these are very early projections, the pitching rotations are subject to change before the season officially begins.**
Red Sox 2022 Season Review
The Red Sox had a surprisingly bad season, finishing last in the AL East by 21 games. Boston’s record of 78-84 marked the team’s first losing season since 2015. They were also eliminated from the postseason following the same game that clinched a series sweep for the Yankees.
2023 Projected Pitching Rotation
1. Chris Sale
2022 stats: 0-1, 3.18 ERA, 5.2 innings IP, 2 ER
Sale’s 2022 season consisted of less than six innings after suffering multiple injuries on the season. If he is healthy again, he should still be a piece of the starting lineup.
2. Corey Kluber
2022 stats: 10-10, 4.34 ERA, 164.0 IP, 79 ER
Kluber played in Tampa Bay for just one season, leading the entire MLB in walks per nine innings. His first year in Boston comes on a one-year deal with a club-option in 2024.
3. Nick Pivetta
2022 stats: 10-12, 4.56 ERA, 179.2 IP, 91 ER
Pivetta was tied for an MLB-leading 33 games started in 2022. His 4.56 ERA was still one of the best marks of his career.
4. James Paxton
2022 stats: N/A
Paxton was acquired from Seattle in December of 2021, but has not pitched for them following a Tommy John surgery. Despite this, he exercised his player option for 2023.
5. Garrett Whitlock
2022 stats: 4-2, 3.45 ERA, 78.1 IP, 30 ER
In his second year in the big leagues, Whitlock started nine games. Despite pitching 73.1 innings in 2021, he never cracked the starting lineup. The jump in his ERA from 1.96 in 2021 to 3.45 in 2022 was likely due to being thrust into the starting lineup for a stint.
