League of Legends was one of the first games to have a genuinely robust ranking system for players. Initially, players could even play Ranked 5s with their friends and grind their team to the top. Unfortunately, that is gone but the League of Legends Ranked System has continuously changed throughout the years. This coming year will be no different. Here are the massive changes coming with League of Legends Ranked in Season 13.

In the latest Riot Games update, the devs discussed some of the changes coming to Ranked in 2023 with season 3. For starters, there will be two different Ranked Splits. This means that there will be a soft reset in the middle of the year as there have been the past few seasons. The first season will start when it normally does in January. Then the second season will start in the middle of the year but they have not decided on a time yet. Fans should expect sometime in May or June but no later than July.
Changes to Promos
After this, they described arguably the biggest change, promotion series between each tier are going from Best of 5 to Best of 3. They say that essentially most people reach the rank they want to and then stop playing because of how long it will take them to get to the next one. There will be a lot of conversations around this change though. Just a few years ago players had to do Best of 3 just to get to the next rank within each tier. Now they can just play their way through Silver to Gold and have to win two out of three games to get to the next tier.
There is one argument that some fans will make that Best of 3 also means fewer chances to win. So instead of a player losing two of their promos and then running off three straight, they will have to make sure they do not drop both of their first games in promos. This will certainly be interesting to watch.
Skins and Rewards for All
Lastly, they are changing ranked rewards. It is clear that they want to incentivize people to play and still reward them. The Victorious Skin that comes out every year will no longer be locked behind a need to get to Gold. Instead, it will be for everyone but there will be chromas to signify how highly a player is ranked. Also, with there being two Splits, they are making two Victorious Skins instead of just one. Seems as though Riot Games are ready to dish out free skins for playing their game more often than in the past.
Overall, these will be pretty major changes to watch out for with Season 13 closing in.
