Each week teams will be fighting for position in an effort to make the College Football Playoff. The teams will be ranked each week, but what matters most is who they have played and beaten already on the field. Preseason rankings will not be taken into consideration here. Here is College Football Playoff Bracketology October 30.
CFP Four
1. Tennessee Volunteers (8-0)
Tennessee added another good win to their belts as they blew out Kentucky, who was ranked at the time the game was played. With wins over Kentucky, LSU, Alabama, Florida and Pittsburgh, they definitely have the best resume so far this season. Their next big game comes this week.
This week: at Georgia Bulldogs (8-0)
2. Clemson Tigers (8-0)
Clemson didn’t play this week, but their case to be ranked this highly arguably got weaker. Syracuse lost to Notre Dame and Wake Forest lost to Louisville, which hurts some of their big wins. They still have played a very tough schedule and deserve to hold this spot until more games are played.
This week: at Notre Dame Fighting Irish (5-3)
3. Ohio State Buckeyes (8-0)
The Buckeyes let Penn State hang around for over three quarters, then put them away to notch a solid win. With Notre Dame slipping this year and the rest of the Big Ten not playing to their expectations it has been hard for Ohio State to get big wins. The eye test has been good for the most part this season.
This week: at Northwestern Wildcats (1-7)
4. Michigan Wolverines (8-0)
Beating Michigan State won’t do as much for their resume as it has in past seasons, but Michigan stayed undefeated. There could be a case that they still should be ranked higher than Ohio State, but the bad nonconference schedule will hold them back (although look at UCONN!).
This week: at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (4-4)
First Four Out
5. Georgia Bulldogs (8-0)
Georgia had no problems defeating Florida to extend their record to 8-0. They also have a good win against Oregon, but otherwise have played a lot of teams near the bottom of the SEC. That will change this week and so will their ranking.
This week: vs. Tennessee Volunteers (8-0)
6. TCU Horned Frogs (8-0)
In a game against West Virginia, who TCU regularly struggles with, the Horned Frogs escaped with a victory. They stayed unbeaten, which is the most important thing. With the way things are going, they may need to stay undefeated to make the College Football Playoff.
This week: at Texas Tech Red Raiders (4-4)
7. Alabama Crimson Tide (7-1)
Alabama had a much-needed bye week. Their lone loss to Tennessee still isn’t a terrible knock against their case to be ranked highly in these rankings. They have a few tough games left this season that they need to take care of before being back in the College Football Playoff talk.
This week: at LSU Tigers (6-2)
8. Oregon Ducks (7-1)
The Ducks defeated Cal this week, which at the very least, keeps them in the conversation. Their only loss was to Georgia in a blowout, but they have been impressive since. They have a win over UCLA, which has kept them atop the Pac-12.
This week: at Colorado Buffaloes (1-7)
First Four Out
9. UCLA Bruins (7-1)
Beating Stanford keeps the Bruins in contention. They have a key win over Utah and their only loss is to Oregon. The Bruins have to finish strong, but have outdone expectations this season.
This week: at Arizona State Sun Devils (3-5)
10. Ole Miss Rebels (8-1)
Ole Miss fought tough and defeated Texas A&M on the road in week 9. The Rebels still have a decent win over Kentucky, but need more big wins to move up the rankings.
This week: BYE
11. USC Trojans (7-1)
USC defeated Arizona on the road in week 9. It was not their best game, but having just one loss this far in the season keeps their hopes alive. They still lack a marquee win.
This week: vs. California Golden Bears (3-5)
12. Illinois Fighting Illini (7-1)
At this point, Illinois has to be regretting dropping a game to Indiana earlier in the season. They defeated Nebraska this week to move their record to 7-1. The Fighting Illini are in the driver’s seat in the Big Ten West, but have some tough games coming up in a few weeks.
This week: vs. Michigan State Spartans (3-5)
