College football week 6 is in the books. After every week fans can take away things from what happened on the field. Here are 6 things learned from college football week 5.
1. Tennessee is for Real
In a game where they were favored by just three points on the road against LSU, Tennessee dominated their competition, winning 40-13. There is still a long way to go this college football season, but Tennessee has another big win under their belt. While this doesn’t guarantee National Championships, Tennessee is now a good team and Josh Heupel has the program in a great standing.
Quarterback Hendon Hooker is a Heisman candidate, as he has the offense humming. The team has a fast-paced offense that makes them entertaining to watch. Tennessee will play Alabama in week 7 and win or lose, Tennessee is for real and has set themselves up for their best season in over a decade.
2. Alabama Needs Bryce Young
There was a lot of hype surrounding the Alabama-Texas A&M matchup before the season, but the Aggies had two losses already. Alabama was heavily favored to win the game, even with starting quarterback Bryce Young being questionable with a shoulder injury. Although the Crimson Tide did win, it came down to the last play of the game.
Backup quarterback Jalen Milroe didn’t play terribly, but had just 111 passing yards. For Alabama to win a National Championship, they need the calm presence of Young to be back under center. He has had clutch plays throughout his career and can get them to reach their goals. If he can’t come back to play soon, Alabama could be in trouble.
3. Kansas vs. TCU Was a Great Game
In a matchup of teams who have overperformed based on preseason predictions, Kansas and TCU played a game that had some back and forth. It proved to be entertaining the whole way through. TCU won 38-31 to stay undefeated, but even with a backup quarterback in, the Jayhawks were able to stay with the Horned Frogs.
Both teams deserve to be ranked for week 7 after the good game they produced. TCU has a high-scoring offense and now looks like one of the favorites in the Big 12. Kansas proved they weren’t frauds either. More teams who don’t get a ton of national attention can produce these games when given the opportunity.
4. Notre Dame is on the Right Track
Notre Dame played BYU in Las Vegas in week 6. The Cougars were ranked before the game and the location was much closer to BYU than Notre Dame. Notre Dame was coming off a bye and got the job done against the Cougars, winning 28-20.
After starting the season with a loss to Ohio State, fans hit the panic button after the team lost to Marshall. Since that point, and since head coach Marcus Freeman converted to catholicism, the Fighting Irish are 3-0. The season was a big rebuilding year for the Fighting Irish, but they were still expected to win at least eight games. Now, they can still achieve that.
5. Ohio State is the Best Team in the Country…Right Now
College football is more fluid on a week-to-week basis than it will ever get credit for. There are ebbs and flows that happen, especially when dealing with college students. Right now, Ohio State is the best team in the country and should be ranked first. They are blowing teams out and performing well.
Over the last few weeks, both Georgia and Alabama have struggled in their wins. Getting a win is important, but these teams have more obvious holes in their games to clean up. Ohio State just defeated Michigan State 49-20, which was the expe So, for now, Ohio State is the best team in the country. What matters though is who the best team is by the end of the season.
