Unlike many fandoms, Dota 2’s player base is eagerly awaiting the release of the new battle pass. This is because, unlike many developers, Valve knows how to do a Battle Pass correctly. In fact, they were one of if not the first to do it, with The International Compendium 2013. While there have been a great many imitators, none have been able to come close to Valve. So what’s in there that makes players so excited for Dota 2’s 2022 Battle Pass?

An Ear To The Ground
Despite their near-total lack of communication with fans, very few of Valve’s moves have ever seemed tone-deaf. Apart from Artifact, their games are typically all hits, with Dota 2 being the long-standing king of these. It’s only natural then that Valve would give Dota 2 extra care. That extra care shines through in many places, but few brighter than the Battle Passes. They typically feature not only extensive cosmetic rewards for progression but unique content for players as well. 2020’s TI 10 battle pass featured the Aghanim’s Labyrinth game mode along with a minigame called Cavern Crawl. Unique content like this is a long tradition, so Dota 2’s 2022 Battle Pass will almost certainly also feature some.
Of course, the star of the show is still the cosmetics. They are undeniably a huge part of Dota and one of the main ways that players express themselves. The Battle Passes always include a wealth of unlockable customization items, for almost every aspect of the game. Hero cosmetics, taunts, chat wheel lines, and even custom terrain are among the items included in the Passes.
Into The Pot
Another feature of the Battle Pass that keeps it popular with fans is the price. The Battle Passes typically have a low cost, being $10 or less for the base option. However, Valve also offers two more expensive options that grant 50 and 100 levels respectively. It’s important to note that Battle Passes traditionally have 2000 or more levels. Thus, players who buy the more expensive options aren’t able to completely skip the content.
Another key factor of the Battle Passes is that 25% of their revenue goes into the TI prize pool. This helps justify the purchase for many, as they are contributing to the competitive scene.
All In Good Time
The hype around Dota 2’s 2022 Battle Pass is still growing, but when might it end? While there is no confirmed release date, all signs point to the Pass coming out soon. While Battle Passes typically come out in May, Valve has announced that 2022’s Battle Pass will be different. They pushed back this year’s Pass to last through TI 11 and for a significant time after. They didn’t specify the length of the “significant time”, which could indicate this Pass will run longer than most. As for when the Pass might begin, fans speculate that it will release with Update 7.32. As Valve have confirmed the update will be released before the Regional Qualifiers on September 3, fans are excited.
At the latest, fans know the Pass will be released with The International. Thus, no matter what happens, the wait is almost over. It’s unknown what changes Valve may have in store with the 2022 Battle Pass, but they will surely be worth the wait.
