The Kansas City Chiefs are using their franchise tag before the free agency period officially begins. Left tackle Orlando Brown is receiving the Chiefs’ franchise tag, just one season after being traded to Kansas City.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the news via Twitter on Monday.
Kansas City Chiefs are franchise tagging OT Orlando Brown, per league sources. Brown becomes the first free-agent-to-be this off-season known to be getting the franchise tag.

Brown was traded from the Baltimore Ravens to the Kansas City Chiefs for four NFL Draft picks, including their 2021 first round selection. The Ravens also sent two picks back to Kansas City in the deal. Since arriving in the NFL in 2018, Brown has made three Pro Bowls. He has also played in every single game since being drafted, for four years in a row.
The franchise tag will allow the Chiefs to retain Brown’s services for another year without giving him a new deal. The Chiefs will have until July to get a long-term deal done with one of the best young offensive tackles in the NFL.
