The bowl season gives fans and scouts alike a chance to analyze NFL Draft prospects against solid competition. Bowl scheduling allows all eyes to be on each game. Here are the NFL Draft prospects in the 2021 Independence Bowl.
BYU Cougars Draft Prospects
Tyler Allgeier, RB
Allgeier has played for BYU for four seasons, but has really produced over the last two years. His play has helped the Cougars have two straight seasons with double-digit wins. For his career, the running back has put up 2,712 rushing yards, 425 receiving yards and 34 total touchdowns. In the 2021 season, Allgeier has tallied 1,414 rushing yards, 187 receiving yards and 20 rushing touchdowns.
At 5-foot-11 and 220 pounds, Allgeier has a good build for an NFL running back. He moves well for his size as well, but will need to show the ability to catch the ball out of the backfield more consistently. Allgeier still has some eligibility left. If he enters the 2022 NFL Draft, he’ll likely be drafted in the later rounds.
Projected Draft Range: Fifth Round Pick-Seventh Round Pick
James Empey, OG/C
Empey has been making an impact for the Cougars for four seasons. He started in his first season and was named a Freshman All-American. He started through the next two seasons and has started in 2021, but has missed time with a leg injury. Empey was a preseason All-American by a few outlets heading into this season.
His 6-foot-4 and 303-pound build is good for a center at the NFL level. Empey’s leg injury will need to be checked out, but he has plenty of experience and tape at the collegiate level that is worthy of him getting NFL looks. He is currently projected to be a late-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Projected Draft Range: Sixth Round Pick-Undrafted Free Agent
Other Draft Prospects:Â TE Isaac Rex (UFA)
UAB Blazers Draft Prospects
Gerrit Prince, TE
Prince went to community college before getting to UAB, but has spent four seasons with the Blazers. For his career, Prince has 46 receptions for 785 yards and 13 touchdowns. Most of his production has come this season. He has hauled in 32 passes for 656 yards and eight touchdowns.
He has good size for a tight end at 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds. His one year of good production and age may keep people from drafting him, but he did prove to be a good red-zone target this season. Prince should be drafted in the later rounds of the 2022 NFL Draft.
Projected Draft Range: Fifth Round Pick-Seventh Round Pick
Alex Wright, Edge
For the last three seasons, Wright has been a good pass rusher for the Blazers. He has 19 tackles for loss and 11.5 sacks in his career. For the 2021 season, Wright has 7.5 tackles for loss and six sacks for his best year yet.
His measurables are great at 6-foot-7 and 270 pounds. NFL teams will be keeping an eye on whether his testing numbers will be good. If they are, he can be a riser in the draft. Wright is just a junior who could go back to school, but if he declares he could be selected late in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Projected Draft Range: Sixth Round Pick-Undrafted Free Agent
Other Draft Prospects:Â S Damon Miller (UFA)
