Trade had the pleasure of playtesting Set 6 before its release on PBE for just under a week, and although the meta may change a lot before the official release of the set, here is his best guess regarding the best champions of each tier, be sure to try some of these champions out!
TFT Set 6 Best Champs 1 Cost:
Ezreal
Ezreal’s ability in Set 6 is similar to his Mystic Shot (Q) on Summoner’s Rift. He fires a missile at his target, dealing single target magic damage. He then gets attack speed, stacking up to five times. Ezreal is probably the best early game carry for a variety of reasons. His ability does good and consistent damage as well as giving him attack speed. He can carry AP, AD, and Attack Speed items, and his typing is extremely good.
As a Scrap Innovator, a player can simply toss a component (such as a bow) on him, and the Scrap effect will turn this bow into great early game items such as Statik Shiv, Giant Slayer, or Guinsoo’s Rageblade. The innovator trait allows him to pair with other cheap units such as Zilean and Singed to create an extra unit on a player’s board.
Singed
Like Ezreal, Singed is another great champion in the early game due to his typing and ability. His ability in this set is similar to his Fling (E) in Summoner’s Rift. He flings an enemy towards the largest cluster of enemies, stunning his target and all surrounding units for a brief period.
Very few one-costs in Teamfight Tactics are able to provide any sort of crowd-control, let alone area-of-effect crowd-control. Like Ezreal, he is also an innovator, which is a great early game trait. As a Chemtech, he can also be combined with other cheap units such as Warwick and Twitch to gain damage reduction, attack speed, and health regeneration to create unstoppable early game boards.
Kassadin
Although Kassadin may not be as good of an early unit as Singed or Ezreal at two-star, Kassadin is likely to be the strongest three-star one-cost carry this set. His ability is similar to his Null Sphere (Q) on Summoner’s Rift. He fires an orb that deals damage, mana-reaves his target, and gives him damage reduction for four seconds.
His typing is Mutant Protector. Both of these traits are extremely selfish and powerful, and with a couple of items as well as a few good augments, Kassadin can literally 1v9 boards in the late game despite being a one-cost unit. Expect tank and healing items such as Bramble Vest and Dragon’s Claw, and Hextech Gunblade to be very good on him.
TFT Set 6 Best Champs 2 Cost:
Blitzcrank
Good Ol’ Blitzcrank is returning to this set, this time as a Scrap Protector Bodyguard. He continues to have the same ability as previous sets, his Rocket Grab (Q). At the start of combat, Blitzcrank will hook the farthest enemy, stunning them and causing his allies to focus the target. Despite being a two-cost, Blitzcrank has triple typing, which allows him to be played in many comps.
Expect Blitzcrank to be very good and essential to many comps, especially at the beginning of the set when players have forgotten how to properly position against him. A reminder that putting Zephyr on Blitzcrank and positioning him in a corner allows a player to hook the second to corner unit!
Zyra
Zyra is once again returning to this set; however, this time it is similar to her Q on Summoner’s Rift. Zyra summons vines in a row with the most enemies, dealing and stunning all enemies. Despite being a very simple ability, Zyra has possibly the smartest targeting AI in the history of TFT for a two-cost. It simply finds the row with the most enemies and stuns them all. This allows her to hold Morellonomicon extremely well in the mid-game and in the late-game, can force all the players in the lobby into very sub-optimal positioning, a potential that is seldomly seen in two-cost units.
Swain
Swain is returning as an Imperial this set; however, unlike his former self, he will not be returning as an unkillable five-cost machine. Swain is returning to Set 6 as a two-cost, and despite this, is still an extremely powerful carry. His ability is his Death’s Hand (Q). He unleashes a cone towards his target, dealing damage to everyone in the cone and healing for each enemy hit. He is an Imperial Arcanist.
Set 1 players will remember Imperial, a trait that allowed one of the Imperial units to deal insane amounts of damage. Similarly, the Imperial trait this set will allow the Imperial Unit that did the most damage last round to deal extra damage. The Arcanist trait is similar to the Dusk trait, giving a teamwide boost in AP, and even more to the Arcanist units. These two extremely selfish traits allow Swain to become a 1v9 drain-tank monster despite only being a two-cost unit.
TFT Set 6 Best Champs 3 Cost:
Shaco
Set 3 players will remember how unbelievably frustrating playing against a Shaco comp was. Shaco would quickly one-shot entire teams while constantly dipping into the shadows, dropping aggro, and life-stealing back to full. Well, Shaco is back this set with the exact same ability! He is also a Syndicate this set, which gives him Omnivamp, Armor, and Magic resistance. Expect Shaco to be just as powerful as previous sets if not stronger. Similar to previous sets, crit, defence, and lifesteal items are likely to be incredibly good on him.
Zac
Zac is very similar to Aatrox in Set 4. Zac’s ability fires at the two further allies within three hexes and pulls them in, dealing a good chunk of damage and gaining damage reduction. Unlike Aatrox, a centred Zac will likely be unable to hit well-positioned backline units, but when combined with Zephyr or a Blitzcrank, a player can easily maneuver their board to snipe backline carries. Although he has a slightly worse ability than Set 4 Aatrox, Zac is a three-cost, meaning a player can play Zac quite early and have him stay relevant all the way into the late game.
Vex
Vex is the newest addition to the League of Legends roster and is also featured in this TFT set. Her ability is similar to her Personal Space (W) on Summoner’s Rift. She shields herself for four seconds, and when the shield expires or breaks, it deals damage to all nearby enemies. If the shield was not broken, it deals additional damage. If the shield was destroyed, subsequent shields will be 25% stronger, stacking infinitely.
Vex is very similar to Set 4 Annie, she is an Arcanist (Set 4 Dusk) meaning she gets huge amounts of AP, and can solo front-line and tank teams for an eternity while also dishing out incredible amounts of damage. Expect items such as Gargoyle’s Stoneplate and healing items such as Gunblade Gunblade to be incredible on her.
TFT Set 6 Best Champs 4 Cost:
Janna
Janna’s ability in Set 6 is the same as her ability in Set 2, her Monsoon (R). Janna knocks back all nearby enemies, stunning them, and healing her entire team for four seconds. She supplies amazing peel for a player’s backline carries against units such as Assassins, and even if Janna is unable to get any value out of her knockback, the large area-of-effect heal makes her an extremely powerful four-cost support. She also has triple-typing as a Scrap, Enchanter, Scholar, making her able to supply her entire team mana, health, and magic resistance as well as being extremely flexible as to which comps a player can fit her in.
Jhin
Jhin returns this set as a Clockwork Sniper, but instead of his typical four bullet hard-hitting auto attacks, his ability is now his Curtain Call (R) on Summoner’s Rift. He transforms his weapon into a sniper, and he fires four shots, each dealing massive damage and piercing through the entire enemy board. The fourth shot is an execute that is guaranteed to critically strike. Innately he also gains attack damage based on his attack speed, but always fires at a fixed rate.
He is a Clockwork Sniper; Clockwork units supply attack speed to the entire team, and Snipers deal more damage per hex between the Sniper and their target. Not only is Jhin expected to be extremely powerful, but he is also by far one of the most fun and creative champions in the entire set, be sure to try him out!
Lux
During the internal playtest, Lux was probably by far the most broken champion in the game. Her ability is her Final Spark (R), she fires a laser towards the furthest enemy, dealing damage, reducing their magic resistance, and refunding mana if it killed a unit.
In Set 2, Lux was a seven-cost unit that would one-shot entire teams; however, she returns in Set 6 as a four-cost, essentially doing the same thing. Expect Lux to be one of the strongest carries on the release of Set 6 unless she is heavily nerfed before the official release of the set.
4 Cost Honorable Mentions:
Orianna and Seraphine
Although this list was supposed to only have three champions per tier, there are simply too many amazing four-costs to not put a couple more on this list. Both Orianna and Seraphine are great support champions in Set 6. Orianna’s ability is her Shockwave (R); she sends her ball to the largest cluster of champions, drawing them in, stunning them, and providing all allies near the ball with a shield. Seraphine’s ability is her Encore (R); she projects her song towards the largest group of units, dealing magic damage, slowing her enemies’ attack speed, granting ally attack speed, and healing her allies as well. Ezreal in Set 4 essentially did the same thing, but Seraphine is a four-cost unit. Both Orianna and Seraphine are outstanding supports that have very smart targeting AI and are easily slotted into many late-game team comps, be sure to try them out.
TFT Set 6 Best Champs 5 Cost
Jayce
Jayce is a flexible five-cost unit in this set who can be played as a front-line tank and damage dealer, or back-line support and secondary carry. When positioned in the first two rows of a player’s board, Jayce gains armor, magic resistance, health, and gains access to his melee ability. He slams down in front of him, gaining a shield and reducing everyone’s Armor and MR; similar to Set 5 Garen’s ability but with a smaller area of effect.
When placed in the backline, Jayce deploys an acceleration gate, granting a lot of attack speed to everyone in his row before unleashing a shock blast that does a lot of damage. At the time of playtesting, the ranged form of Jayce seemed much more powerful than his melee form, but given his flexibility and potential buffs to his melee form, expect Jayce to get a premier five-cost support and secondary carry.
Kai’Sa
Kaisa’s Set 6 ability combines her Icathian Rain (Q) and Killer Instinct (R) from Summoner’s Rift. She dashes away from enemies and fires a volley of missiles dealing massive damage. For each time she has auto attacked this combat, she fires an additional missile. This means that Kaisa can ramp into the fight, one-shotting units and constantly dashing away to protect herself, literally 1v9ing enemy boards. Expect attack speed and healing items such as Guinsoo’s Rageblade and Hand of Justice to be her best-in-slot itemization. Her selfish traits (Mutant and Challenger), means that a player who invests items and supporting units into her will likely yield great results.
Yuumi
Yuumi’s ability in Set 6 combines her You and Me! (W), and Final Chapter (R) on Summoner’s Rift. She attaches to her closest ally, granting them a massive shield. When attached, Yuumi innately gains mana as well as whenever her attached ally attacks. At full mana, Yuumi launches waves towards the furthest enemy, dealing big damage and stunning enemies for 1 second per wave. Yuumi can essentially single-handedly stun entire enemy boards while being untargettable and granting massive shields to her allies. She is best when paired with a drain-tank carry, perhaps a Shaco or Kaisa, turning them into unkillable 1v9 monsters.
5 Cost Honorable Mention:
Jinx
Jinx returns this set as another premier AD hyper carry like she was in Set 3, but with a new twist. She rides her rocket into the sky and crashes down on the enemy team dealing big damage and applying healing reduction and damage to all units except Jinx. She then swaps to her rocket launcher, dealing 100% bonus Attack Damage to everyone around her target. Although Jinx can sometimes fly into the enemy team and instantly die, she probably has the highest DPS in the entire game and is capable of literally annihilating enemy boards in just a couple of seconds with the right items and supporting units. Be sure to run Vi with her as the Sister trait allows Jinx to gain infinite stacking attack speed after every takedown!
