The New York Jets are having a great week. Coming off of their first win of the season, they have locked up one of their best young players, John Franklin-Myers, to a 4-year extension worth $55 million. Franklin-Myers has been destroying opposing offenses this season, and the Jets were smart to lock him up.
The deal, which includes $30 million in guarantees, will end when Franklin-Myers is 29, right in time for another couple-year deal. Joe Douglas continues to show how important he thinks investing in the offensive and defensive lines are to this team’s success.
This deal also comes at a great time considering that the Jets will potentially get to wait until 2023 to negotiate Quinnen Williams‘ extension. Foley Fatukasi is also be a player Douglas will want to re-sign, and he will be an unrestricted free agent this offseason. This defensive line will become one of the most expensive in the NFL, but their production certainly matches that.
In terms of production, Franklin-Myers currently sits at 3 sacks and 4 tackles for loss, which puts him in the top 20 in the NFL for both categories. This, keep in mind, is without Carl Lawson, who went down with a season-ending injury during the preseason. When he comes back, this defensive line will be one of, if not the best defensive line in the NFL.
Joe Douglas was recently being heavily scrutinized following the Jets’ 0-3 start, mostly because of the offensive line’s inability to protect Zach Wilson. When he was introduced as the General Manager, he made a promise to rebuild the offensive and defensive lines, and that he has. With two more first round picks in the 2022 NFL Draft, look for both picks to go offensive line.
They have the pieces on the roster to keep a great defensive line, and this move shows how committed the team is to their goal. JFM is just the start.
