The NFL Trade Deadline is less than a week away and rumors are starting to speculate on potential star players that could get moved. In the next few days teams have to decide whether they should buy, sell, or stand pat at the deadline. The deadline is November 3 at 4pm eastern time. There has already been two major trades where the Minnesota Vikings sent Yannick Ngakoue to the Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys sent Everson Griffen to the Detroit Lions.
Both the Cowboys and Vikings may not be done trading their veterans this season as both are rumored to want to move a few more veterans. Here are deals that teams in the NFC East should do before the trade deadline.
Dallas Cowboys try to buy low despite seemingly lost season
Dallas Cowboys receive: Quinnen Williams
New York Jets receive: 2nd round pick and 5th round pick
Even though the Dallas Cowboys have a 2-6 record they are likely done shopping their veterans after trading away Everson Griffen and cutting Dontari Poe and Daryl Worley. The only other veterans on the roster who may be rumored to be moved are Amari Cooper, Michael Gallup, and DeMarcus Lawerence. But right now it seems like the Cowboys aren’t prepared for a fire sale. This was evident from when the Seattle Seahawks contacted the team about the availability of veteran edge rusher Aldon Smith. The reason why rumors about the Cowboys star players have come out is because of the failure for this team to play well under new head coach Mike McCarthy and his staff and it is unclear at this point whether Jerry Jones is willing to let go of the coaches or the veterans on the current roster during the offseason.
The New York Jets are one of the few teams who have played worse than the Cowboys up to this point. New general manager Joe Douglas has shown that he is not afraid to make trades and are willing to trade guys in order to gain future assets to build the team from the ground up. 2019 first round pick Quinnen Williams is a name that has been in rumors lately. The rumors are that the Jets would be willing to move Williams for the right offer and it would start at a second round pick. Williams has two years and a fifth year option left on his contract after this year.
Dallas’ biggest struggles have been on defense despite losing their quarterback, left tackle, and right tackle to season ending injuries. Williams has the potential to become a franchise centerpiece on this defense. He has played better in his second season compared to his rookie year and still has so much room to grow. Adding Williams would help the Cowboys this season and could be a part of the Cowboys long term future plans. A second round pick from a team like Dallas is extremely valuable, but there is a case that a player of Williams caliber is better than a player who could be selected with this pick and worth the price tag of the pick.
New York Giants reunite a veteran receiver with a past team
New York Giants receive: 4th Round Pick
Seattle Seahawks receive: Golden Tate
The New York Giants season has went as well as most people thought it would. Despite all of the teams young talent and free agent additions, on paper the Giants did not look like a team who would be a major threat this season. It also doesn’t help that the teams best player Saquon Barkley tore his ACL in the second week of the season. However under new head coach Joe Judge, the team seems to be more competitive during games and their defense has played surprisingly well this season. But the Giants have confirmed that they are interested in moving some of the veteran players on their roster.
Two weeks ago a rumor emerged that Antonio Brown was going to return to the NFL and when he did he would like play for the Seattle Seahawks. However Brown shocked the world again when it was announced he wasn’t joining the Seahawks but he was joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Seahawks don’t have a void at wide receive the group of Tyler Lockett, D.K. Metcalf, and David Moore have been more than sufficient for Russell Wilson who is the favorite to win league MVP. But if the team wanted to add another weapon to add to the impressive group Seattle has already it would only get them that much closer to returning to the Super Bowl.
Giants wide receiver Golden Tate was drafted by the Seahawks in 2010 and was Wilsons favorite receiver for a long time. He has then moved around to a few different teams, but has been an impactful player for those teams. Tate can immediately be the teams number three receiver option and become a great possession receiver for Wilson. There won’t be much worry about Tate having to click with the offense the connection with Wilson should almost be immediate. For a Day 3 pick, there is no reason why the Seahawks shouldn’t make this trade.
The Philadelphia Eagles get rid of a huge salary and add another playmaker
Philadelphia Eagles receive: Breshad Perriman, 6th Round Pick
New York Jets receive: Alshon Jeffrey, 3rd Round Pick
Despite the sloppy play by quarterback Carson Wentz, the Philadelphia Eagles are the favorite to win the NFC East. The Eagles don’t play the prettiest but have been competitive in a good amount of their games and have been close to making come backs against some of the better teams in the league. Early in the year a lot of their star offensive players were sidelined with injuries, but now they are starting to get healthy. The Eagles are bound to play better once they are back at full strength, but they should try to add a rental piece to the offense to give it more fire power.
The Jets have a few veteran players under one year contracts that the team will try and shop this year. One of those veterans is wide receiver Breshad Perriman. Though he hasn’t played amazing this season, at the end of last year he emerged as one of the most dangerous deep threats in the league. During the last five weeks last season, Perriman had three 100-yard games, 506 yards, and 4 touchdowns. He could be the spark a struggling offense could add to help stretch out their offense.
The Eagles could use all the depth they can get at wide receiver despite the emergence of Travis Fulgham and drafting Jalen Reagor in the first round, they need all the help they can get at the position. Not only Reagor but DeSean Jackson and Alshon Jeffrey have struggled to stay healthy this season. The Eagles have not been quiet about how they would like to move Jackson and Jeffrey. They both have decently big cap hits on their long term contracts and have not been able to stay healthy. After this year the Eagles are going to be way over the cap and will need to make cuts. Both Jackson and Jeffery are likely going to be cut. Unless they can convince a team to take on their remaining salaries.
If the Eagles were to package Jeffrey with a Day Two pick and send it to the Jets for a Day Three pick and Breshad Perriman it could work for all parties. The Eagles could get a healthy rental at receiver who can join their group of extremely fast receivers and cut some salary cap. While the Jets would be adding a receiver in Jeffrey who has had success under Adam Gase and turning a one year contract into a valuable draft pick.
Washington takes a flier on a former second round pick
Washington Football Team receives: Dante Pettis
San Fransisco 49ers receive: 6th round pick
The big move that the Washington Football Team is expected to make is supposed to feature former Pro Bowl edge rusher Ryan Kerrigan and 2019 first round pick Dwayne Haskins. But it is unlikely that the team would move either unless they receive proper compensation.
Despite Kerrigan being 32 years old, a free agent after this year, and the team having his replacement in Chase Young the team won’t move off of him so quickly because they still believe they have a chance to win the division. It will likely take a first or second round pick to convince them to trade Kerrigan.
Haskins went from starter to third string this season and it is very evident that the teams long term plans don’t involve him despite head coach Ron Rivera‘s comments. They will also move him for the right price which is likely a second round pick. The teams that could trade for Haskins are likely playoff teams that have aging quarterbacks and may not have an early enough pick to draft their future starer early in the first round. But at this point no potential playoff team is willing to sacrifice an asset like a second round pick for a player who can’t contribute for the team right away. He will likely get moved over the offseason.
The San Fransisco 49ers have dealt with an insane amount of injuries, especially on the offensive side of the ball. However despite these injures the team is looking to move on from their former second round pick Dante Pettis. He continues to move further down the depth chart and has been replaced in the lineup.
Washington has struggled to fill the void opposite Terry McLaurin. During the offseason they offered Amari Cooper a deal making him the highest paid receiver in football and instead he took $2 Million less a year to stay in Dallas. Currently veteran Dontrelle Inman and Cam Sims have play the second most snaps to McLaurin during games this season. Neither has made a solid case to keep the role long term. Washington could throw San Fransisco a late pick to take a chance on Pettis who may be able to remind the league why he was taken in the second round to begin with. Pettis has the rest of this season and next season left on his current contract.
