Geno Smith has agreed to re-sign with the Seattle Seahawks. He served as Russell Wilson’s backup in 2019 starting in August. He won the job over former Broncos quarterback Paxton Lynch.
The NFL’s Ian Rapoport reported the news via Twitter on Thursday afternoon.

Smith was drafted by the New York Jets, where he set a franchise record for passing yards in a season by a rookie. He spent three 2013 through 2016 with the Jets, before signing with the New York Giants in free agency.
When then-coach Ben McAdoo decided to end Eli Manning’s consecutive game streak, Smith was named the quarterback in his place. The Giants lost the game, and Manning was given back his starting job after only one game on the bench. He was also the very first black quarterback to start a game for the New York Giants. The Giants were the last team in the NFL to reach this milestone.
After a year with the Chargers, he landed with Seattle, where he is being retained. The financial specifics of the deal are yet unknown, but he was given a one year contract.
